Legally I could harvest 5, I normall take 3 unless someone asks me for meat. Three will keep me and my wife fed all year. The only way I will take a big buck is if it is larger than what I already have on a wall, if not it is spikes and does.

I took three last year, 2 does and a buck. I wouldn't mind filling all 5 of my tags, becasue I'll eat it every day.

This year, I am concentrating all my efforts on the place I got for free in Dripping Springs, but the stipulation is, I MUST take 5 deer off of it each season if not 10 (need another hunter). I'd love to help take more if you need the help! Back on Topic: I usually take what I can @ Camp Bullis....(if I see it) Last couple years have been ok...1 buck and 2 doe, however the growing boys around my house have pretty much already cleaned the freezer from these!

Lookin' for 1 Buck. Almost as happy to shoot a cull as anything. Maybe a couple of Doe from Comal or Somervell counties.

I follow county laws first and foremost. I'm a college student who eats everything I harvest - minus predators. The cost of my lease is very reasonable, creating a perfect get away (only 20 mins away) and food source.

So I'm curious how many deer you will harvest? How many deer are legal in your county?
In my county we are allowed to harvest 5. As a rule I will take 1 buck and 1 doe. If I see a buck that needs to be removed...ie Big Spike...I'll take it too but again as a rule I will only harvest two. One buck with atleast 4 points on one side and unlimited does. Just have to buy a seperate tag for each doe.

We ate 4 by the beginning of March. I personally have not killed a deer in 10 years. Now that the boys have two on the wall, the old man might just have to show them up.lol By the time I get done skinning and quartering our guest's deer I don't have the inclination to get one myself.

On my lease I'll take a mature 8 or better and a doe. If I see an older spike then I will take him out as well.

Over the last few years I have slowly stopped liking deer hunting as much. Last year, I felt nothing when I shot a doe. So, I am probably done with deer hunting for a while.

Shot 1 last year. I usually try for a few. I'll shoot the nicest one I can eat. My trophy is when I can cut into a butterflied backstrap while thinking about another year I was able to hunt with my dad.
OMG, this is the best slumber party ever!

A couple of does, usually during bow season. A nice buck if I see one that fits the bill- that's been two in 8 years.

If I get the opportunity ill fill all my tags. I usualy take care of the doe tags first thing in bow season. and also have hunting spots in 3 different counties that are all less than 9 miles away from my house. but usualy ill only take 2 doe and one buck.. try and stay at a 4yr old minimum on bucks...and I get distracted by duck season

I'm a meat hunter, but I hunt on public land, so I consider any deer I shoot there to be a trophy. Last fall I shot a little doe and I bragged about it more than you guys who shot giant B&C bucks. If I can repeat that feat this year, I'll be happy.

Harrier,
I understand what your talking about! I hunted public land for a lot of years! When the kids were little that's all I could afford! I hunted Davy Crocket Nat'l forest and a lot of timber co. land until they turned it into type II. I hunted type II a 3-4 years until it just got too dangerous. Last time was in Anderson county. I was up in a ladder blind I had put up and just when I got settle about 4-6 rounds in quick succession flew over my head...I climbed down real fast and sat at the bottom of my stand until I was pretty sure the hunting/shooting was over and I took off and never looked back!
You are correct though, any anything you take on public land is a trophy!
