I am going next Tuesday on a hog hunt and was wondering has anyone used a 12g 28" non rifled barrel and what load did you use at what distance. For the most part just wondering how far it would be good for?

use either buck shot or a slug. They should all work if you are within range.

You can go to walmart and pick up what they call rifled slugs. depending on how good you are and what choke you shoot them out of you can shoot out to 75-100 yard. I DO NOT suggest shooting them out of a FULL CHOKE!

Buckshot may glance off if the shot is not perpendicular, depending on where the shot is placed. We have never had an issue with slugs at all. We shoot a TC Encore WITHOUT a choke in it. We use Remington rifled slugs and I think we have run a few Winchesters from WalMart as well.

Rifled slugs from wally world will have plenty of power to kill hogs, I think your issue will be hitting them. You need to shoot the ammo to see where it hits before if you expect to shoot past 20 yards and actually hit what your aiming at.

We use buck shot when running pigs in the four wheeler or from a bow blind (25-35 yards) it has killed every pig that I have shot at. I have never tried further than that.

I think you can damage the barrel threading for the choke if you fire a load without the choke installed.

You end up with the threads being damaged by erosion due to the flame and they can get filled in with lead making it near impossible to thread the chokes back in

Just talked to the ranch. They dont allow buckshot. I have to use slug. I have a mod choke for my 28" barrel. Can I use a slug in a mod choke? If not I will have to use my 20" barrel.

I cant use buckshot on the ranch. Went to Cabelas and picked up a box of Federal Premium Barnes Expander HP Slugs. These things have a plastic sleeve that comes off when it leaves the barrel. It is all I could find. It says for rifled barrels only. But talking to a guy there he says he uses them in his non rifled 870 like mine.
