My 11yr old daughter traded her Russian SKS for a CVA Elite Stalker .223. I let her pick the trade she wanted and she wanted this rifle. The SKS kinda intemidated her I think. Can anyone tell me anything about these rifles? Also what kinda range? Thanks

She said she wanted it to shoot coyotes and maybe hogs with. We have been over ran with coyotes this yr. They are after our show goats and hair sheep. Would it work on hogs?

It would if she can place right behind their ear it will fold them up, just use a good bullet like a nosler partition, or tsx it will be fine for hogs.

Really? Iv'e dropped plenty of pigs with Max 50gr loads to the vitals. Just remember pigs hearts are low in the chest.

Put it on the ear. Drop em every time. Great gun all we use in Mexico for hogs.

should've kept SKS. Remove bayonet, add muzzle brake. Could replace stock.
Only drawback is scope attachment.

The SKS had tapco tactical stock 2 30 rd mags red dot scope and muzzle brake. Like I told her it's her rifle to trade. I still have 3 more SKS's. She just really liked that .223. Like I said I think the SKS intimedated her just like my AR.

You said it's hers. If she's happy, you're happy. .223 works on lots of stuff, deer and hogs included. If she can make head shots she can drop whatever she wants to. With a single shot she will learn to make them count. Her CVA should be quite a bit more accurate than the SKS, and a lot softer on her shoulder. I say stress ethics and pride. Make each shot count. Trust YOUR rifle and YOUR skill. Don't let anyone bad mouth her choice of gun or caliber. Looks like she made a good decision for herself.

I kill big pigs with a .17 hmr with 20 grain hunting tip, ear shots, even body shots, heart/lung shots makes jello out of organs. the .223 is more than enough. I got too many hogs to kill to spend money on high dollar centerfire ammo, kill the pigs, drag em off to the gut pile.

Good shot placement drops those pigs. I shot the biggest deer I've ever taken with a .223. Ran about 25 yards and fell over dead. I'd like to get a .223 for mine when they're old enough.

She can use FMJs and I bet they'll be deadly on hogs. And TSXs or NPs or maybe even FMJs on deer. wink

My uncle has shot some of the biggest deer on the property with his Rossi single shot. Pretty sure he uses 55gr SPs.

Nice, and I hope you daughter enjoys the superior rifle.

Don't take the bashing for trading the SKS too hard. I remember my first SKS back in college. I think I paid about $70 for it. They are not rare, they are not collectable, and they aren't even that accurate. These folks who value them above the $300 range are just nuts. I don't know what the mania is, but I traded/sold all my SKS last summer because fools were offering my WAY more than they were worth.
