This is my first attempt at a hand carved decoy. Any tips will help. It was all done by eye without any templates. Just used reference photos. Waiting on my eyes to come in from Van Dykes.

Better than my first, I have yet to try. Keep at it! Looks like an incredible amount of work.

Thank ya Rooster! I have a new found respect for professional carvers. I wish I would have had some cork to do the body instead of the cedar I used.

I like it...it's kind of blocky but then again that kind of makes it different. I agree the painting is great!

YoungGun, That is a great first decoy. You will want to make quite a few changes on the next ones when you get bit by the bug. The paint is great and the body looks just like a first decoy, a little blocky. My first was blocky too. Most people's are.

There are a few decoy carvers on this site and a few in Texas, I have been thinking about us having a carving day maybe, a get together and share tips and tricks.

Thanks guys!Ya Dave I would enjoy that any tips would help me greatly! Ya i've noticed most of the carvers are from the northeast and I kind of feel like its a dying breed.

I think once I get my hands on a band saw working with wood will be alot easier, so I probably will stick with wood!

Heads are made separate with two nails in them to hold them on

Thanks jeff! I made this one separate but used a wood dowel and some wood glue to hold it in place.

Looks cool, do you plan to float it? Ballast weight inside?

I do plan to float it this season but I haven't figured out how i'm gonna get it balance in the water correctly.

Get a rubber band and put it around decoy, then slide weight in between decoy and rubber band. Put decoy in water and slide weight around till you find the balance point. Then nail weight on

Looks like it might be a bit top heavy, but a very good first effort.
