I just got on a deer lease today in Coleman county. Saw three deer and one big rattlesnake which unfortunately slithered into a hole before I could get off a shot.

A little feedback is appreciated.

It has some scrub brush but it is in the middle of farm land. I'm curious about deer density in the area, anyone have any idea? How about overall hunting? What is considered a trophy from this county? 135? 150? Yes I realize that there are a lot of factors but I'm talking about relatively well managed area.

Thanks

Good numbers. 135 is a big one. Don't shoot up the place (snakes etc) before the season gets here.

Where abouts? I'm in runnels county and don't know why I keep on the lease. We see big ones on camera but as soon as season starts. They are never seen again.

Biggest killed at ours was 140. That was 7 years ago.

Coleman cty is a GREAT place to hunt. Lots of deer, especially towards the Colorado. A 150" inch buck doesn't raise eyebrows. Good farmland in places with Milo and Wheat being the primary crops. Good numbers of Turkey also. My Uncle has had a 500 acre ranch in southern Coleman for 20 years or so. He and my cousins have shot some big deer from their place.

Good luck,if it has been a well managed area. You can find mature 4.5-5.5yr olds in the 130-140 maybe even better with good spring rains.

Thanks guys for the comments. I'm not sure about how well it's been managed. The lease is a section that is about 60-65% farmland and 35-40% shrub brush. I've been told that one side belongs to a 10k ranch that only allows family to hunt, they do not lease any of the land. As for the rest who knows. Saw three deer while walking it, saw plenty of sign, saw some on a game cam so things are looking pretty good so far but only time will tell.

I've got a buddy who has hunted in that area for the past several years. He's shown me some pics of some real nice deer over the years. It seems he was paying a pretty penny for the lease though.

Same here. Used to hunt Coleman. For the most part, good county with a good population and nice quality up

Texas Sportsman Mag have Coleman County included in counties where big bucks are located. See last year's Oct edition or this one for 2013 will probably have map.
