I'm a 1911 guy, but 1911's need to be cleaned, oiled, and generally taken care of.
I have a glock 21 and glock 30 for muddy, damp, dirty environments. I'm pretty sure I could store them in the bottom of a swamp for a year, pick it right back up and fire it with no problems.
As Janie said, there's plenty of glock torture test video's on youtube. check em' out

I do love my 1911 and it has its place in the line up but I wanted something to carry. I went from a G30 to a XDs. I'm pretty happy with it so far. The G30 was a good gun but just not my style.

I admit I love my 1911s, but they do require some knowledge and maintenance.
I got my hands on a FN FNX-45 and grew quite fond of it. It might be my next pistol purchase.

Ruger SR1911, Made in the USA, design is 100 years old and still the best and most reliable.

I'm most definitely a 1911 guy, however we need to remember they were designed with larger tolerances than they are made with now. Old ones shoot good even if they rattle. Most plastic guns are designed for 9 or .40 and scaled to handle .45's and 10's. From the get-go 1911's are made for .45 ACP's.

I asked this same question about a month ago. I wound up with 18 pistols highly recommended.
I know there are some really great ones out there but it all depends, like most things, on your goals and your budget.
As in all guns, 90% of them outshoot the shooter.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

I have had several new 1911's that have ran flawlessly besides a few hiccups with poorly made handloads.

Dave that is an awesome statement... might add that to my signature...

I'm a firm believer in a few polymer pistols. Glock Springfield Ruger...
Stay away from S&W polymer guns! They should just stick with steel!
I have owned MANY different glocks and the only ones I really liked we're the 19/23/32 and the 20/21 platforms.
After selling off all of my glocks to buy into the XDM line I bought an XDM 3.8 compact .45acp, Springfield XDM 5.25 comp. 9mm and an XDS .45acp
I didn't like the Xds, too small for such a large punch. Not very accurate past 15 yards and hurt my hand after 20rds
I fell in love with the 3.8compact WAY more accurate than any Glock I've owned and just has the best feel for MY hand.
I ended up selling my XDS to buy a kimber ultra cdpII, once I got that gun I just knew I was set for a lifetime carrying the 3" 1911 so I decided to go ahead and sell my 3.8 XDM to fund some AR parts. Biggest mistake!!!
I soon realized that kimber has crap finish on their guns and decided to part ways with the ultra cdp and bought my XDM 3.8 .45 back from the friend I sold it too!
