Both are killing some great deer now with management and age structure. Be hard to choose. I you look at TBGA site both areas had about the same for biggest typical but Trans Pecos killed a bigger non-typical but not by to much. But like anything else there are some really big deer killed in each area that never get reported.

Panhandle all the way. Bigger mass, bodies.

Right now, panhandle for sure. Better groceries and the drought has been devastating to west Texas.

I saw that. At first I couldn't believe it. Looks like a pretty good swath of rain with more predicted.

I'm not picky, I'll take which ever I have the opportunity to hunt.

I'd head to the irrigated crop fields of the panhandle.

Panhandle has higher density, bigger bodies and more antler mass on average, mainly due to the agriculture.

But Trans Pecos deer are more challenging/fun to hunt in my opinion... and because of the lower pressure, you always have the chance of finding that muy grande that's been hiding out in parts unknown.

To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

The Trans Pecos Mule Deer are not big antlered, all are small bodied, no mass, no irrigated crops, no protein feeders, and it never rains. So don't waste your time looking for a lease. There are no deer there. I would look to the Panhandle to hunt Mule Deer whistle

I'll be in your neck of the woods this year after those Mulies... where are you at in Pecos County? Definitely need the rain down there, but population looked good 2 weekend ago. Saw 18 mulies and 2 WT's cruisin the ranch in the high-rack.

Roy (7mag), might have an extra spot on this lease if you're interested.

I am in Western Pecos County south of IH-10 towards Alpine. We are in our 7th year on this lease. We had 1/2" a week or so ago and looks like 3/4" last night. Not all of the ranch got both rains though. Rainy season is coming up in the summer months. Ranch Manager has been seeing lots of deer also he said.

the shinnery covered sanddunes of winkler, andrews, gaines counties are hard to beat, been hunting out there 16 years(not in Gaines or andrews that long, started in winkler then moved on to andrews then gaines counties), seems to get better every year

Biggest mule deer I ever saw was between Tahoka and Brownfield, from a distance we thought it was a small elk, but it was a huge mule deer.

The biggest Mulie I ever saw was in Andrews county working cows on John Castlemans ranch before it was legal to hunt in that county. I grew up hunting west of fort Stockton on a ranch off of Hovey road. That is some beautiful country. I prefer the mesas and big draw hunting. I'm not as mad at the deer as I used to be. To me a great hunt these days is riding around in a jeep with my buddies drinking cold beer, not spending all day weAring out boot leather.

I can show you a picture of a muledeer less than 30 miles from you that will make your jaw drop to your ankles. I don't consider it trans nor panhandle, there are some giants just righ under our noses! It's on my comp at work, ill post it tomorrow.

Panhandle smoother ranch roads

I enjoy hunting the Trans Pecos better than the panhandle, but both can and do produce some great Mulies

Some of the biggest mulies I've ever seen were in Oldham Co north of Adrian along the breaks of the Canadian river. Big and wide. Shot a 179" 4x4 up there one year, many moons ago. Big brute too! Weighed 275 lbs. Shot him 3 times in the chest with 160 grain 7mm load before he finally slowed down to a walk and sat down!

I've never hunted Texas mulies but have always wanted to. Don't think I'd be choosy if given an opportunity. However, if I had the choice, I think I'd head west. I love the terrain out there. I'd love to explore and photograph some of those wild places.

I think the Trans has been way to dry the past few years to produce very many real big Mule Deer. I know the Longfellow ranch is only selling management hunts for Mule Deer and Elk this year...If it were me, I'd be looking in the Panhandle area and it's going to cost some big money.

I don't know if you have noticed but the panhandle hasn't exactly had any rain either the last few years.
