I'm almost positive that I am correct here but... I had a buddy tell me that you can shoot 12 birds in the morning, clean them, put them in the cooler, then shoot 12 in the afternoon since the possesion limit is 24.

I told him this can't be right because it says DAILY bag limit. not per hunt.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks

The bag limit is 12 per day and you can have 24 in possesion at any time. You cannot shoot 24 dove legally in one day.

Welcome aboard.

His interpretation of the legal defintion is correct if you believe lying to the game warden is okay. Daily bag is for the day 30min before sunrise to sunset. If you live in Dallas and are hunting in Krum or Denton or Ennis or Mckinney I doubt he is going to believe that you spent the night in the field. You might want to dig a little deeper into your buddies sense of ethics.

That's exactly what I thought. I figured there was a way around it but I'm not gonna try it. I've never done it that way and don't plan on doing it

Who knows the answer for this?

Is it legal to have yesterday's birds (12 or 15) in the cooler in your car while hunting the next day? You are legal on #'s and your car is parked on the edge of the field.

Based on the spirit of the law you should be legal. I'm sure this happens all the time with people that do two hunts out of town. They might have a hotel room and checked out that morning so there is no option but to leave the birds in a cooler in your car. Should be explainable to a GW but I really don't know if they would believe you. One of those things that even if a GW checked you he might not check your truck so it might not be an issue.

Actually, you can keep them in your vehicle. I think our outfitter was interpreting it a little wrong this weekend. He said to leave them in the lodge while hunting the next day b/c the new game wardens will try to get you on anything. One of his groups the day before was searched by the Feds and they were looking the glovebox and spare tire area for extra birds! You just can't have them on your body while walking to your destination (vehicle or camp) from the spot you were hunting which makes sense.

Daily Bag: No person shall possess more than one daily bag limit of birds while in the field or while returning from the field to one's hunting camp, automobile, or temporary lodging facility (see Documentation, below). For the first day of any season, the possession limit is the daily bag limit.

Good question. I never thought about being in that situation, but now I could see how easy it would be if you did hunt out of town.

Welcome aboard. You'll find a lot of information here. I know it has helped me learn the rules here in Texas.

To add to this discussion...I've always understood the possession limit was twice the daily limit except for opening day. I understand this to mean cooler, fridge (in the camper) or freezer at the house.
I've got some buddies that understand it to mean in one two day trip?
Oh, and welcome aboard!

Here's what you shouldn't do. Shoot 12 in the morning and eat them for lunch. Then go out and shoot another 12 in the afternoon. No evidence. Whoops. I mean its against the law. Just kidding, I've never done it and the people that do should be put to death. Or just pay the fine. Game Wardens need the money for their districts.
