What is your experience with using the water shield type protein in your spincast feeder? Thanks

Dont do it, free choice only. Its a matter of time until it gums up your feeder and its a mess to clean.

We use a 50/50 mix with corn and protein in our spincast feeders. Got 4 feeders like this that spin all year long. Been doing this for over a year now. No problems to date. I would prefer to feed gravity only, but way too many axis that can clean a gravity feeder in no time.

I assume you are speaking of Purina Antler Max water shield. I used it a lot until it got too expensive The key for me in using it in the spincast was not to use the lid that sealed tight on the drum. Toss that and use one of the galvanized lids that just set on there. I never had a problem.

A little mixing with corn also seems to help in that regard.

Used it with no problems in a spincast feeder. I agree on the lid, you need some ventilation.

For protein to do your deer any good it needs to be fed free choice. There is little to no chance a spin feeder will deliver the amount a few deer would normally consume from a free choice feeder in a 24 hour period. Then factor in a 50% ~ 70% waste of the thrown protein to non target species (raccoons, squirrels, skunks, birds, mice, pigs) what you have left isn't enough to supplement 1 deer per day.
If you want something that reliably works in a spin feeder that offers more protein than straight corn try corn roast soybean mix. Or during the off season you can convert your spin feeder to a free choice by making or buying a drop tube and protein head.

If you are the only one on the lease feeding then one spin feeder will not make much of a difference. If you have 10 spin feeders all spinning protein out inside a feed pen then it can make a difference. Non-target animals will eat feed if it is in a free choice or spun on the ground, they don't care how they get it. A lot will depend on the amount of deer on the place also. If you do not have a feed budget then free choice will be the best way if your deer numbers are in the CC of the place.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

I tried free-choice on my last lease and there was just no way to keep up. The lease was 6.5 hour drive one way. I put out 1000 pounds and put a camera on it to see how long it lasted. 8 days later it was empty. Even if you take the 6+ hour drive out of the equation your average hunter (me) can not afford it. So, I started spinning it. I'm sure they didn't get all they needed but they sure do like to eat it off the ground. I ran it through spin feeders for 3 years and never had one clog up on me.

Thanks for all the response's. this will help me. Our lease is 6 hours for me as well and its hard to get there as often as i would like. We have 7 feeders and only 2 feed in off season. I might stick to corn or that soybean someone was talking about. I have never fed during off season so not sure about all this. Thanks, Chad
