Buy a 7.62 Saiga, well after thing calm down. Seriously they make great hog guns if you want that caliber. In this caliber you are on the edge of what diameter can work with the AR bolt. And the 7.62 AR magazine also is severely curved over 20 rounds and harder to find by far.

Right now the cost of buying the parts for "building" (yeah right "building" , about like building Legos) an AR or even an upper is outrageous. There are way better prices on complete guns or uppers when you find them. I bought a DPMS 5.56 with 2 magazines and a hard case at Cabellas two weeks ago for $739 plus tax. You will have a harder time finding a 7.62 but deals are out there.

Maybe a silly question, but why not just go with an AK 47? I can add any accessory to my AK that others can to an AR. And they are basically as reliable as they come.

There may be a reason im missing, im not trying to troll.

If my BCG will ever get here, I will have built a 7.62x39 upper for the express purpose of punching pigs with a total expenditure of $460. I started building this upper on December 23, 2012.

It's an ARP barrel (no longer available - for all I know I got the last one), MOE handguards, DPMS railed gas block, DPMS copy of the YHM phantom flash hider, RGuns upper, RGuns BCG, RGuns charging handle.

I will do a range report when I get it put together with Chrony results from a variety of ammo, post it to YouTube and copy here.

First, I panic bought 40 rounds of PPU SPRN. That was almost certainly really stupid. Then I bought 200 rounds of Hornady SST 7.62 Russian from Cabela's for about $0.85/round shipped (regret it now, time will tell how stupid that was) and finally 1280 rounds of Tula HP in spam cans for $0.37 round shipped from CTD (I know, I know... I'm a whore).

I have 3 10 round mags that I panic bought for too much money (and for no good reason). One C-Products that looks like it will work pretty well judging by the way ammo stacks in it (stamped "C-Products" in block lettering; from Model 1), an AR Stoner mag that looks a little suspect and a newer C-Products mag that also looks a little suspect (stamped "C-Products" in artsy scroll lettering from MidwayUSA).

I can't really make an educated comment on whether it's worth it yet, but it sure as hell has been fun.

If you have a lower already and can build an upper relatively inexpensively and it works reliably, then I think that's a good bit smarter than purchasing an AK. Maybe dumb compared to purchasing an SKS for the same purchase - don't know yet. If I can print a group smaller than 1" I'll feel like I did just fine...

You had to have started then because Rguns is the scourge of AFCom right now with their atrocious customer service ($100 fee to cancel an item on back order that was shown to be in stock when ordered) and running at least six months behind on shipping likely including your BCG. I ordered a carrier about the same time and yes I am still waiting. Like I said, I wouldn't want to piece parts right now when you can find better deals on complete uppers and just be waiting on one item on back order.

$100 fee to cancel an item on back order that was shown to be in stock when ordered????

World is full of useless conniving effluence. I'd dedicate my online life to ending their business if that happened to me. Completely ridiculous.

You could just buy a 5.45X39 AR upper instead. Checked ammo prices lately?

7.62 X 39 - $.36/round
5.45 x 39 - $.18/round

http://www.gunbot.net/ammo/762x39/

AR 7.62 upper 365.00 Model One Sales
AR 5.45 upper 430.00 Same place

Break even point ($65 differential for upper / .18 [differential for 5.45 vs 7.62 ammo) is after 361 rounds fired.

Good luck

Well, I guess if I get beyond 8 weeks and still haven't received a shipping notification from Rguns then the $100 cancellation fee situation is going to turn into a "stop pay" situation...

I was sure happy as a pig in poo when I hit the submit button - considerably less so now, but that's not necessarily my right as an informed consumer. They told me to expect a long delay and I'll recover the pig in poo feeling if I receive the goods within the timeframe they gave me. If not, then I can be righteously angry and indignant.

In the meantime, I guess the decision to build or buy really comes down to how particular you are about the barrel and gas system and whether you are trying to "beat the ban"... And price, of course.

They have backed off on the fee or so I understand but it ticked off a lot of people.

7. There is a $25.00 cancellation fee for orders cancelled within 30 days of placing the order. This is to eliminate trolls and zombies.

I had a 7.62x39 upper last summer. It generally ran okay, but I did get light strikes on TulAmmo. I had a ten round magazine and two twenty rounds mags and they ran fine.

OTOH, I bought a Saiga to replace it and am very happy I did. I ended up converting the Saiga to AK47 configuration, but I enjoyed it in the sporter fashion as well. IIRC, the Saiga was $450 after taxes.

I would consider 7.62X39 the bare minimum for hog hunting and once this market corrects itself I will be adding on to my quiver

I built one last year but have yet to shot a hog. I purchased my parts from ARP and once I got it together the only problem I had was light strikes on russian primers. This was solved by the model 1 firing pin.

Accuracy seems to be on par with an Eotech and the gun runs good supressed.

That wire stock on the AMD is crap for anything past 50 yards IMHO. There is no place to get any semblance of a cheek weld. Otherwise, they are good rifles, nice and short. There is a stock on the internet that helps a bunch with the cheek weld, but overall wire stocks just arent much good for accurate shooting.

I'm not a fan of the AMD, for the same price I'd just get a WASR....if you want something better a VEPR (Russian made), would be ideal.

I really enjoy mine. Bushmaster. After the firing pin upgrade, runs like a top with c-prod or Frankenmags.

Took my AK out last time hunting just for a change, and the lack of ergonomics was a amazingly obvious after handling the AR-47 for a year or so.

I think the AR in X39 is perfect hunting rig for my east Texas lease.

OKSTATEFAN: what make of 20 round mags did you have, and where did you get them? I'm looking for some...

I have had my AR in the 7.62x39 for 2 years now. I love it. I only shoot brass through mine. Its never seen steel. I bought mine through Stone Chimney in Tyler and he has serviced it well over the years. Brandon did a trigger job and I use only 20 round clips because of the weight. A few hundred rounds down the pipe and no problems

I bought a complete 7.62x39 high end upper for my AR for $600. Runs like a top. Its easier to find ammo for it than the .223/5.56 config. I have heard of bolt problems (cheap bolts, bad staking) and need of replacing firing pin with longer one. Mags are easy to find. 20 round is plenty for me, I tend to use 5 to 10 round mags because the are easier to maneuver rifle with, and I'm over the Rambo thing, and I don't own safe queens, I own tools that are taken care of.
I have SKS's I bought cheap, ($125) 20 years ago in full size and paratrooper carbine config. I use them as ranch rifles and wont cry if damaged or lost. I couldn't see paying the price for a mini 30 just for bragging rights or looking good in a mule. It's all what you prefer. I tend not to get too technical about some small things and pick them apart. If it works and you like it, go for it, If I used it every day and my life depended on it, of course I would think different. The hogs wont know the difference.

If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, then baffle them with BS.
