I just moved to Texas from Nebraska. Currently I am living in Galveston but in 2 years will be on move and looking to stay in Tx. Where would a good place to be for good upland and deer hunting. Also I've hunted springers my whole life but interested in getting a pointing dog any suggestions.

South Texas around the border.

Suggestions on a pointing dog? That s kind of vague, I assume you mean a bred? A breeder? Hard to beat a well bred pointer for upland but there are many different breeds and you are the one that will have to live/hunt with the dog so its your decision.

I was thinking about a small munsterlander, vizula, or Llewellyn setter

I think I'd get another springer if I were you. There are a lot more doves, and dove hunting oppertunities than there upland birds(insert quail) in your area.

I'd go to the panhandle if I were you. Setters aren't bad. I'm partial to shorthairs and Brittany's myself. By moving to the panhandle you're also putting yourself closer to Kansas, NM, and other upland states. And the panhandle has some quail and pheasant.

I'm from Nebraska also and run a springer. He does well for duck, dove, and upland (when I go back to Nebraska). He's certainly not perfect for each of them - but that's the cost of having a multi-functional dog. The only complaint I have is he's a burr magnet so I keep him shaved pretty short during hunting seasons.

The other posters are correct about the panhandle. That's the best place in the state for upland hunting according to what I've read. I don't have practical experience - just what I've read. As far as deer hunting, the easiest way to is find a lease. There's lots of public land but it can get pretty crazy. One thing to keep in mind also is there's a lot of trophy bucks down here, but they are small-bodied deer in comparison to ones you've hunted in Nebraska.

Ok thanks guys, yeah I would like to go back to Nebraska one day but my wife hates the winters and she is from Texas. So I'm just trying to find the best scenarios for hunting in Texas.

If she hates the winters in Nebraska, she probably won't like winters in the panhandle. Seen some of the worst snowstorms I've ever seen up there.

The panhandle is the best place on earth (in my own opinion). The worlds best waterfowling, upland hunting, huge mule deer and whitetail, pronghorns, turkeys and anything else you can think of. But the winters are rough. I run 3 GSP's and they are awesome all around dogs. Good luck on your search!
