I just purchased a Stevens Model 10 in 308. Can anyone recommend a decent scope that would not break the bank ($200 to $300)?
thanks

I'm assuming this will be used for target shooting?

I'd say check out the Vortex's line of scopes. Their crossfire 6-18 is about $200. If you want to step up your budget another $100, you can start getting into their Viper line (not the PST scopes, though). A buddy's had good experiences with Viper optics.

I have used a few scopes in Mueller's lineup, and I'd recommend you check them out as well.

Burris FFII runs right at $200 with very clear glass. That's what I have on a few hunting rifles. Look on SWFA.com

I have two 308's..one is a 26 in SPS..w/a BDL Syn Stock and a Burris XTR 3X12, and the other is a Sako TRG 26in w/a Leupold Mark 4 8.5X25..both work well..but are a little pricey if you are
wanting a scope under $5-700...I think the Burris was about $715
thru the Gun Club and the Leupold was about $1800...DD

JW there are no "GOOD" cheap scopes..there are some that will work and you can use out to say 2-300 yds but they all have issues..With todays costs and prices, it's impossible to make a "Good" scope cheaply..When we get first time buyers at the Gun Club I usually advise them to spend at least as much on the glass
as they did on the rifle..You cannot hit what you can't see..Don

Save up your money and put a Burris Eliminator on it. Then you can shoot way out there.

Pick up a used Leupold VX-II on Ebay. The glass is only ordinary, but there's nothing wrong with it, and Leupold will fix it for the cost of shipping if it breaks. A used Nikon Monarch, or Pentax Lightseeker is also a good choice; they have better glass than the VX-II, but don't have the super duper warranty.

In new glass, I've heard the Pentax Gameseekers are pretty good, for very modest money, but I prefer to buy the nicer used glass myself.

Don Dial explained this really well.

What is the primary function of this scope?

Is there a certain amount of magnifcation that you would like to use?

Have you seen my thread on riflescope school?

Scopes are like cars. There are so many models and some of them work best in different scenrios. ( Don't think I spelled that correctly)

Please let me know if there is anything I can explain to help you make an informed decision.

If you are stuck in that price range, the I agree with the Burris, and they have forever warranty. Once you get to the $400 range, the sale Zeiss is a nice entry level scope.

Nikons work well too. I have Nikons on just about everything. They have worked well for me out to 300 yards with no problems.

I and my hunting Bud have 312 Burris XTR Tact Scopes on a couple of rifles, his is a SAKO 30-378 Wthrby and mine a Rem L/H .308..WE have only used them to about 450yds which is the length of the senderos where we cull shoot in Fowlerton..no problems, about $850 and they were comparable to my Mk 3 3X10X50
Leupold, and I like the Tactical Crosshairs..but I have a 8.5X25
Leu. Tact. Mark 4 and you can immediately tell the difference..and its about 3X the costs..DD

The Redfield Revolution. Clear glass, tracks well and holds zero. Made in the USA. Leupold warranty. I would stay away from the Revenge, its their made overseas model. Haven't heard anything bad or good about them yet though. But I wouldn't risk it for $40 more get the Revolution.

The Revolution is made in Oregon according to the Redfield website. The Revenge is built in the Phillipines. I've shot from great scopes and would say that the Revolution is incredible for the money. My old Army buddy told me he liked my Revolution more than his VXII.

Stop by Cabelas...look thru several scopes in your price range.

Run them thru their paces, adj the crosshairs, adjust anything adjustable, see if your eyes like it after looking thru it for a few minutes, then buy the pne that feels best for your eyes.
