Last year loggers clear cut the rest of the west side of my lease. they missed a big spot when they replanted with pine saplings, so I'm going try my hand at a real food plot.
A few months back I bought a ATV disc from tractor supply.
I then turned this area over before the weeds had a chance to get a foot hold.
Last week and today I turn again and spread 200 pounds of lime.
Will plant then fertilize oats and wheat in 2/3 weeks or sooner if hurricane Gustav comes up this far.

Also noticed a strip of dead baby pines, so I'll probably add another 20 yards to this food plot.
I'll add pictures as/if this plot progresses.

**QUESTION**
I'm going to plant right before the next rain. should I spread then turn in the fertilizer now, or drag in the seed and then spread the fert on top?
Or can I do it ether way?

I put out the fertilizer when I first disk the plot. I usually do this a month or two before I plant. I use round up on anything that pops up a couple of weeks later.

Then I disk before I plant. If it's a large seed like oats I disk them in about an inch then I have a old cattle guard I use to to smooth the plot. Thats it.

If it's a small seed like clover I disk then smooth a couple of times and use a hand spreader for the seed. It its going to rain I'm finished, if not iI use a4-5 foot section of chain link fence to cover them a little.

Careful with fertilizer on new ground. It is usually already fertile.

I killed my first wheat patch with fertilizer.

I would have A & M test it.

Got the same little disc. Added a weight tray to get some extra digging in the West Texas soil. I would disc, spread your seed, then drag back over it with something fairly light, old piece of gate, old box springs, etc. If you spread your seed then run your disc back over the ground it could put your seed too deep.

Fertilized yesterday and of course I read the instruction afterwards. looks like I put out twice as much triple 13 as I should have. If it burns my seed, then oh well, live and learn.

I dont need a weight tray with all this soft NE Texas sand. If I run into a tough spot I start going in clockwise circles. the little disc realy digs in then.
For a drag, I use a 20' heavy duty chain behind the wheeler. works great.
Gonna plant tomorrow if the plot is drys out enough.

The ATV disc has turned out to be a great idea. the deer are hammering this food plot,,,judging from the graze cages in the middle.
Opened up and spread the left over seed on this plot today.
Cant wait till next year. gonna put food plots at every stand!
