I have been bowhunting for 5 years or so and got a new bow about three weeks ago, Fred Bear Game Over. I know that dry firing a bow is a really stupid thing to do. I pulled back the string to check out my draw point and the string slipped. Everything appears to be fine but I am still going to take it to Cabelas and have them check it out. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Only have one suggestion...never ever under any circumstances take your bow to a big chain store!  I will bet it is Okay but take it to Smithfield or PM Wes70(Murphy's Archery) and let him take a look. If he doesn't see this and reply let me know and I will get you in contact with him!

I think it less damaging to you bow to dry fire it then to take it to Cabelas  Take it to Wes.

The energy caused by shooting a bow has to be transferred somewhere (the arrow), and when you dry fire all the energy is transferred throughout the bow which can cause the limbs to crack, strings to break, and the cams to bend.

I was setting the peep so I could tie it in when my string slipped out of my hand and bam broe the string in half. Rushed it to the BowTech dealer and we tore it down and checked it all out. Put neew strings and cables on it and killed a hog less than 24 hours after that with it. I learned my lesson, no more drawing a bow without an arrow on the rest. Right after the ordeal I called Wes 70 and told him what I had done and told him he had been right. Not 2 days prior to the incident he had told me to quit doing that very thing and I told him it would never happen. Been shooting a bow 25 years and it still happened, and I knew better.

i will never draw a bow without an arrow....only dry fired once....but it will never happen again.

I'm with ya. I did it once but only got about half way drawn. Kinda turned my bow side ways to check out the cams as I drew and the string slipped.

I accidentally dry fired an old Bear Whitetail Hunter (6 wheels!). About 2 weeks later, I drew it and the top limb cracked. Can't prove it was the dry fire but I assume it was. My point is that maybe you didn't damage anything at all, maybe you damaged something that is readily visible, and maybe you weakened something that will break at some undetermined time in the future. Some consolation, huh?
On the positive side, I've been present when a half dozen guys have broken limbs while shooting and none were injured. Everybody you talk to has heard about somebody being decapitated of blinded but in my personal experience, I haven't seen it.
Practice doesn’t make perfect.
Practice makes permanent.

Took the bow to Wes70 today to check it out. He said that it looked good. He also warned me on what to look for and listen for. I shot the bow tonight and all is good. Still on at 20. He even met me in the parking lot across the street because I was lost. What a guy, its real nice to have people who are willing to help others in this sport. Thank you.

skeeter, what did Wes tell you to look and listen for? I accidentally dry fired my bow when I first got it a month or 2 ago, I only had it half drawn and nothing broke or at least appeared to. I havent had any problems with it yet though.

ANything out of the normal sounds. If you hear krackling noise or popping when you draw You need to have it looked at. The limb could be cracked on the back side or underthe limb pocket.

For those that have not done it... Dry fire a Driver in your golf game. For some reason it hurts when you miss that dang ball.
This goes the same for your bow.
