Going to look at 2200 acres in Nolan county around Maryneal, Texas this saturday. It would be 10 guys on the place. Anyone want to give me some info or thoughts about the area? Would be appreciated

I grew up there in Maryneal everthing burned two years ago and killed off a lot of game, nothing there but windmills now. Who's property are you looking at if I can ask?

My folks still live there and i visit regularly.

Im actually the son, my Dads friend is the one doing all the communication with the land owner, so I dont know his name.

Killed some good deer there in years past but like i said everything burned around there just getting some regrowth we barely saved the town

I've hunted just south of Lake Sweetwater on the same place for over 30 years. The hunting got worse when the windmills were placed on the ranch south and west of us. Last year we only shot three deer (6 hunters), all does. The drought has had a big impact as far as the fawn crop is concerned. The landowner finally put in a water trough last year, as it was the only permanent water source on the place.

The White Hat fire in 2011 hit the area really hard especially around Maryneal. We own 1200 LF about 8 miles SE of Maryneal and got lucky -- the fire only burned part way into our property before the winds shifted and it turned. Even so, we are still seeing good numbers of deer and range conditions on our property were better than average last year. Normally the area produces bucks in the 110-130 range on unmanaged properties. On well managed ranches 130-140. Have heard of a few bigger being taken in the past few years.

I dont get out there much, so Casterbuser may be able to give you more specifics on how things look so far this spring. I'd definitely go take a look at the property. Also depends on which way out of Maryneal -- south and southeast the topography is pretty rugged with poor, rocky soil and little agriculture. West and further SE towards Blackwell the land becomes flatter with more cultivated fields.

These are pretty typical Nolan County bucks for this year less than 10 miles from you. Many will be in the 120-130 range. If you don't get my picture, sorry.

Looking better this year in maryneal

There are still good numbers of deer around Maryneal. Everything mentioned above regarding the size of the bucks is correct. Anything over 150 is very rare, although they are out there. 10 hunters on 2200 acres is a little high in my opinion, however, if it is managed correctly and the hunters are willing to not fill a buck tag if it doesn't meet the management guidelines, it should be alright.
