My jack russell terrier got sprayed in the face by a skunk yesterday. The smell is aweful! Ive tried hydrogen poroxide, soft soap, and baking soda. Its helped some after two washings. That smell gets everywhere! Anyone have any other remedies? Glad to be back on here by the way. Its been since 2010:)

I used tomato juice when my dog got sprayed. he still had to ride in the back of the truck and stay outside for a week or so. The smell just lingers, although not strong.

My dog got hit, and luckly I had just watched an episode of Pheasants Forever that gave a tip on de-skunking your dog. 1 Qt 3% hydrogen peroxide 1/4 cup baking soda 1 tsp. liquid soap It killed the smell big time, but I had brought the dog in the house. No i wasn't thinking, it was early in the morning and not awake. Here is a link for the recipe: http://briansplace.ynt1.com/skunk.php

They get sprayed all the time during mating season. It works a lot better than tomato juice.

My dogs get hit all the time. nothing works better than cedar. I go out and rip off a bunch of the cedar "leaves" and scrub him down with it real good. works 10x better than anything else and I've tried them all.

Yeah. Massengill. It actually worked on my beagle. Wife sent me to the store alone twice to get a cart full of douche. Pleasant experience. Beagle smelled summer breeze fresh tho.

Very strong tomato juice w/lots of acid w/help..but that won't stop him from going after the next Skunk..once a dog starts they are hard to stop..I had a B&T Coonhound as a boy that would quit a hot track on a Coon just to kill a skunk..DD

The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

make sure you are using Dawn dish-washing soap, it seems to cut the smell/oil the best. It'll take multiple washings depending on the dose he got.

I got sprayed while out varmit hunting last week! Gagged me to death. Smell burnt my respiratory system! They're devil-creatures... Had a pointer take one full face one time and it swelled his eyes shut and made his nose bleed. I gave him Benedryl thinking he was having an allergic reaction, took him a couple of days to recover. I read up on it afterward and their scent actually creates Hydrogen Sulfide when released and can kill small mammals when subjected to a large dose.

tomatoes are not good for dogs but the dish soap, baking soda & peroxide worked. if the scent is in the house, simmer cinnamon or cinnamon sticks with clove & orange slices in a pot on the stove.

X2 on the use of Dawn the combination works best with it from the times I have had to use it. Tried soft soap, body wash and dog shampoo of those Dawn worked very good.

Yup. Actual original Dawn brand has an ingredient that surrounds the oil based microscopic spray droplets & allows you to rinse it away. The cheaper dish soaps don't have it & is why don't work nearly as well on dogs, or dishes.

Save yourself a lot of trouble and hassle. Go online and there's a product that comes in a ready to go spray bottle called "Skunk Off"....no lie. All you do is spray it on and it neutralizes the enzymes in the skunk spray, and carries a pleasant smell along with it to boot. It works amazingly well. I've trained bird dogs for 25 years and this is one of the few products I always have with me whenever i'm at home or in the field. I live in the country and I routinely have skunks around.Works works works!

Don't wet the dog down first, just apply a couple of times and then rinse. Worked about 90% on my dog yesterday and can't smell it today.

Baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and dawn dish soap. Worked on my dog a few weeks ago. Took longer to get the smell out of my truck than it did the dog.

Let the skunk spray you and your friends, that will not help your dog but at least his unfortunate incident will not bother you so much. Being of the terrier breed he may develop a real hatred for skunks and be willing to live through the smell just to kill another. I had a Welsh terrier that hated skunks.
