The Sport Dog 400 i believe, from Amazon has done exactly what I needed it to do.

+1 on the Sport Dog 400. Use it every day, its not failed me yet.

Tri tronics or Dogtra. They are the most reliable. Re-builts are avialable from somewhere... I've now forgotten. Maybe someone here knows? It's been discussed before.

Maybe for duck people. They do not have their advertised range.

It depends what is between you and the dog. Valleys and hills along with cover shorten the distance considerably. But that will happen with any collar.

You could have a bad collar.

I had a SD 400 for five years and never had a problem until the remote fell apart this season. I bought a Dogtra 1900 and have been happy with its performance in the field.

They would not warrant the range when used with Garmin, until Garmin bought them.

Hmmmm,,, There was a time of about 7 years when they were constantly revamping their product. Lots of snaffu's... I did complain and got replacements. I had to complain LOUD!! The last 4 years or so their product has been strong as far as I'm concerned. Don't think my dogs only train within 100 yds. I do a lot of field trial marks and blinds... Almost to the 1/2 mile range.

What features do you want/need in your collar?

Used the sd 400, the camo one, all last season and in some cold temps. Use it at home a lot. No issues and battery life is great.

DT Systems. Been using them a long time (20+ years) have never had a problem other than needing batteries replaced, lost antenna & one time I lost my remote (last year) all I have to do is run over to Walnut Hill & Denton Dr. in Dallas & pick up whatever I need, no waiting.

I am using a dogta that I purchased in 2001. I have had to change the batteries but other than that have had no problems.

Isn''t this like the "Ford/Chevy/Dodge" or "which dog/gun/caliber" is best threads? Any of the above brand names have been around for some time, and are making quality products. You need to look for features rather than brand names.

BTW: I have used Tri-tronics for a good many years now. The feature I most like on the model I use is the separate button for each dog. I generally have up to three on the ground while in the field, and I am not smart or coordinated enough to throw switches to the proper dog before delivering a "bump". I am ashamed to admit that even WITH the separate button for each dog (collar), I sometimes get it wrong.

Dogtra is nice because it has the vibrate feature in addition to separate buttons for more than one dog. The vibrate feature is great fo early collar conditioning.

Collar clinic has older models of collars that have been refurbished for a fraction of the price.

I have a Tritronics Pro 200 XLS 2 dog & a Sport 60. Both have been used extensively...10 years for the Pro and 8 years for the Sport. Both have been very dependable.

However, when these crater, I am switching to Dogtra.

Super Dog SD 400 works very good for me

i use tt on beagles and coonhounds and have never had a problem on range. i know my coonhounds range further than brid dogs.

Thanks for all the replies. I will only be working one dog for duck hunting. Im not really sure I want to use a collar yet but keeping my options open.

I feel safe to say that I can sum it up for you... you want to use a collar. As for type, SD-400 would probably be the cheapest (unless you don't want 400 yards and 100 would do I guess) overall the others mentioned here are great collars
