After seeing Brazosboyts critter post, it got me to thinking. We got a pond with a beaver in it, we've never seen the thing but he is destroying the trees around it. Anybody got any trapping suggestions. I'm gonna put a blind on the pond this year and don't want it stealing the brush I put on it, that's happen before.

I have trapped several nuisance beavers. Mine have cut over 300 trees up to 1 foot in diameter. The way I have trapped them is with snare traps. I bought them from a website called snareshop. I look for the most fresh sign and then find trails they are using to get from the fresh cut trees to the pond. I put my snares on any areas they are entering or leaving the water and on any major trails or fresh sign. I have also places some traps on a tree the males use for scent marking.

This year the water was low enough and I actually saw the opening to the den, so I hung a snare in the opening. A lot of people use coniber traps, but they are expensive and kill traps. I want to make sure I kill only the target animals.

Once I think the beavers are gone, I will take flat black spray paint and paint all the fresh cut trees so I can easily see if they return.

Good Luck. Most likely you won't catch them on your first attempt.

We used to just blow up the dens. Had a friend who did blasting for road ways and gave us a few half sticks and enough fuse to do it safe. That was a while back and our main purpose was to clear the dams, beavers just seemed to vanish....

I'm not real sure but I think it's living in the actual pond damn itself. So we really can't destroy it.

CHECK the state game laws and trapping regs! leg snares are illegal in many states....

Ours are also digging into the dam of the pond. Eventually they will destroy it.

The state will take care of your beaver problems for free.

If the beaver has eaten the bark all the way around, it may be pointless. Usually when the chew into the bark, they hit the cambium layer of tissue, which is where your fodd/water move up into the tree

The paint isn't to protect the tree or try to save it. It is so that you can see if they have returned easily.

Leg trap put in the active run will get em every time. For a little .22 fun, they are almost always visible at sun up and sun down. Leg traps work all night!
