You really need a gun that swings well for you. It's about your body type and how the thing balances for you. It's my answer to everything, but just try a few and you will find one that fits you perfectly. Don't think either barrel is really gonna have a huge performance effect.

26 is my preference. I don't care for the big long guns when moving through brush. I also have a 23 that i have used on dove many times and love it

Are you talking pump, auto, or O/U?

im talking pump. and i do find that my prob typically is being behind the birds. im usually not in too crazy brush so length doesnt matter for that. just trying to find whatll work best for all applications

I've always heard that length does matter when you're in the bush.

I've always heard that length does matter when you're in the bush. No, gauge is more important, as well as how you swing the thing.

Hmmm. I've always heard it was how long you could swing it without getting tired. And that was the key to getting off good shots.

From what I gather....barrel length does not really make a huge difference in performance except for "feel" and ease of use. Longer barrels (26-30")are normally used for shooting at flying objects because most people have a better smoother swing and follow through. Shorter barrels (22"-24)are normally used for turkey hunting because they are easier to carry around through the bush and easier to conceal plus you are normally aiming and shooting at a fairly stationary object. The two barrels lengths you've mentioned should be almost identical in performance and use. Like what was mentioned before is you need to get to a gun shop and "try on" a few different lengths and types so you can get a good feel for what fits you. I would personally go for the 26"....although only 2" longer the 28" just feels to long for my taste and it fits nicely in between but if I did more flying bird shooting I might change my mind. Get chokes that match what you will be using it for and go have fun. Hope that helped.

I don't think you will notice any difference between a 26 and a 28 " barrel, use a gun you shoot well and that is comfortable to carry.

its just 2 extra inches....everything to her, but i doubt yer gonna know the difference unless you ask/someone points it out. if yer behind the birds, then quit aiming, shoot from the hip...but dont be a dick cheney...watch out for other peeps. the only thing 2 inches is gonna do is get ya 2 more inches b4 yer spread opens. maybe if yer super tall, the extra 2 inches might help with balance. jmo

was trying to get an honest assessment guys... Sorry, I don't think you will really notice much difference either. My O/U that I use most of the time for dove has 26" barrels, and my pumps have 28" barrels. I do prefer the compactness of the O/U, but that has more to do with the receiver than the barrel length.

yeah im feeling like a 26" might be the better way. i mainly hunt dove, then itd be quail then turkey and then duck. so with that said it does feel like the best option for that would be 26, im avg height 5ft10 if that matters. thinking back on all that ive shot and or swung in the store, what ive shot that has felt best is a lighter gun like a bps or wingmaster, if its a tad heavier i did like a yildiz which if i remember right had 26", so with something like a benelli nova id think that the 26 is prolly a better fit. i looked at specs of that one in particular and its a tenth of a pound which is 1.6 ounces difference.

I had a Mossberg 500 20 gauge with a 26 inch barrel that shot the heck out of pheasants with. I loved it because it seemed to fit me. The fact that it was so cheap was even better.

well that was an older bps, and the new ones just dont feel the same. i like the rugged platform of a benelli nova and really think thats the best fit for me. now trying to figure out which barrel length.

Have you handled the Nova? I am the same height as you, and the Nova does not fit me at all. Feel like I have to reach out to the next county to work the action. My son had the same reaction, so we put the Nova back on the shelf.

Maybe check out the Weatherby PA-08? I have an SA-08 and it handles great. 26" barrel.
