I'm looking for your opinion.. how much is too much to pay for a day hunt on opening weekend of dove season??? I'm looking at a $100/day hunt which is more than I've ever paid...
I know that it depends on quality/experience/etc but what's your limit?

I have leased property for migratory bird hunting but it included duck hunting that was my main concern. I leased a dove only spot a few years ago for the season at $150. I would be really hard pressed to pay $100 to hunt dove.

For whatever it is worth.

I have never paid a guide more than $25.

But if I was the norm...I would say no more than $50 for opening day.

Well what are you getting for $100? If it's just a hunt and that's it then yeah seem high. But if it includes things like meals, lodging, drinks, or other things then maybe it's worth it.

I'm in the business of outfitting, and I can honestly tell you that at $95 a day per adult gun, we aren't getting rich, like so many folks think. BUT, we don't do the hunts like most do. We don't overcrowd our fields, we provide a great, Texas size lunch including tea and desserts, we also have a "guide" in each field (about 20 hunters average) to make sure rules are adhered to and to take care of any problems that may arise. All of our fields are scouted each day, and we make every effort to put you and your group in a place where you'll have the best chance of shooting a limit that day. Some fields cost us more than others, and on some days, we travel more miles than others, but here is the break down on our expenses. Landowners get an average of $35 per gun per day, $15 goes to liability insurance, $10 goes to advertising, $10 goes to the guides and for their mileage, $5 for office supplies and miscellaneous expenses. $10 for food, tea and ice. That means that we pocket a whopping $10 per adult gunner per day. AND, since we allow youth hunters at just $45 a day, we actually lose money on them. By the way, we've been booked up solid, meaning deposit money in our bank already, for over two weeks for opening day (Septemeber 01). Mainly with repeat customers. We do still have some openings for Friday, Saturday or Sunday, September 05, 06 or 07. If you're interested, e-mail robohunter@hunting-in-texas.com

your including much more then just putting someone in a field, lunch, drinks, scouting and being in the field for problems is a huge plus and makes your cost well worth it.

I would pay the $95 and feel good about it, but I would not pay $95 to someone that just gave me directions to a field and nothing more.

So do you actually pay the land owners per gun or just a lease amount for the season? I'm guessing you are saying that's the average cost/hunter.

Regarding your liability insurance....where do you get that kind of policy?

That landowner cost is just an average. We have MANY leases and each one is a bit different. Some are per gun per day, others are for just a particular season, and some are for all game all year. There are other combinations as well, but that $35 to $40 is what we budget, and so far, it's wound up real close at the end of each year for dove hunters.

Liability insurance for outfitters/guides can be bought on line through several underwriters; outdoorinsurance.com and outdoorsinsurance.com are two of the bigger ones. If you belong to NRA, NSSF or another shooting sports organization, you may want to contact them. Most offer hunting/shooting liability insurance to individuals as well as groups and outfiiters/guides.

We host our dove, upland bird, duck, goose, hog and varmint hunts near Waco, Frost and Hubbard, Texas. The lodge is located between Hubbard and Coolidge.

Good post, I have seen similar numbers. One thing I have always said, the long term success from an outfitter is a business driven by repeat customers and word of mouth. Eliminate your advertising expense and you just doubled your profit.

I think this needs to be repeated...I said it on another post on pretty much the exact same topic a while ago...and that is that most of the regulars that post here have been hunting for a while and have done a lot of leg work and spend time talking to lots of people to find good places to hunt. It's the kind of stuff that doesnt happen over night. So most of the people on here have access to lots of places to hunt so the amount they are willing to pay is going to be much less than the guy that just started hunting or hasnt done much hunting in the last few years. Those guys are willing to pay a premium. In the end everyone pays by either the time they put in finding places and building relationships or gas money scouting out locations.

A heavy note on Outfitters, most O.F. we've hunted with in the past require 2 day minimums and the cash up front, have you ever hunted the second day with or without any fitters, it can be slow to poor. I've hunted with J.Kearn in the past and it was a piss poor hunt opening morning, maybe 10 birds between 10 guys, the afternoon hunt was better but still no limits. The next day put us on a field and ONE bird was shot, then he made the comment Yeah we shot 800 birds off this place yesterday (opening day) I thought one of my friends was going to do more than just chew his rear. And the guys in ThrockMorton the day before the hunt called him on the phone, Oh hell yes were covered in birds...YEAH he was covered alright but is was called B.S. LIAR. If you decide your going to use an Outfitter FIND OUT WHERE THE FIELD IS YOU'LL BE HUNTING and check it out for yourself before you pay a penny. I know there are some Outfits that are on the up and up (I haven't found one yet when it comes to dove hunting) but if your going to screw a guy thats driven 3-4 hours, charge him even a PENNY for a hunt with no birds they should have the nuts to invite you back for a later hunt for FREE. just my .02 cents. Yep I know dove are migratory but I've never seen them come and go in one day unless it was a heavy down pour. I also understand with the price of gas, scouting is out of the question for a lot of guys. Secondly they're only going to hunt opening day and they're done for the year dove hunting. These are the guys that are gravy for the Outfitters, I just hope you shoot some birds. I by no means am try to buring Mr. RoboHunter (don't know him) or any Outfitter on the forum nor am I recommending any one of them either, I am from experience saying weigh your options.

JohnWester,

Not sure where you are located, but I am in the process of offering some land for dove hunts. I am trying to finalize some lease agreements with land owners.

I am by no means an outfitter, just a guy that lives in the sticks and has contacts with people that have vast amounts of land. What I will offer is access to several pieces of land within a 10 mile radius for around $50 per day. If a group wanted to come out and have meals included, that could be done, but would require a higher fee. These fields would be scouted daily as I am already there either hunting myself or checking wells.

Once I get them finalized, and if you are close enough for the drive, I would like to have you and a couple other mods out for a "free" hunt. As someone else said, word of mouth is the best publicity.

I outfit dove hunts in south texas for 80 a day per person and we are usually one of the cheaper outfitters around. We scout the birds for you and like robohunter was saying we have to pay the landowners and other assistant guides. So no we dont make a killing at 80 a day either. Everything in south texas seems to cost more than elsewhere but if you have someone doing the leg work for you it usually pays off in the end, instead of hunting a random field...if i was just going to hunt some random field then the price would drop considerably to what i would be willing to pay, prolly around 40-50 a day and sometimes that is even too steep.

I pay $100 a day with my guy and it's worth it to me because he always puts me on birds. I get to hunt doves 2 days a year so that's pretty important to me

You're probably the typical dove hunter and with only limited time in the field I agree that it's worth a premium to be put on good hunts.
