LAStrutter is correct those are jakes. Have seen though not often were a group of jakes team up and take over the mature gobblers hens. They are very vocal when that is the case and in fights team up on the mature bird. When you find that case the best thing to do is bust a couple jakes (taking youngsters or other new hunters is great for that) and things return to normal pretty quick.

The bird on the right in the bottom pic sure looks like a tom to me. Spurs look to be at least an inch long.

Edit...nevermind. The shadow looks like a nice spur.

They are toms... jakes will have 3feathers on their fan in the middle that stick up higher than all the others

Trust me, they are jakes. Not all jakes have the higher feathers in the middle. I killed a jake a couple years ago with a full fan just like a mature tom. He had his little nubs for spurs and a three inch beard. If you look at the birds in the pic, the middle feathers are a little higher. Some jakes are going to be more developed than others. It just depend on when they hatched. Also you can tell in the pics that neither has a long beard or spurs. Like others are saying, it really doesn't matter. If it makes you happy, then kill it. Jakes eat just as well. A kid will be just as happy killing a jakes as he would a 20 pounder with a 10 inch beard. Hope your son bags one. Good luck

False ^^^^^^^^^^ Jakes start out by having 3 feather's shorter than the rest on both END'S of their fan when they are yearling bird's. In rare circumstances you will get a super jake that will usually have a decent beard and he is the one with the thre feather's higher in the middle. These bird's all have three short feather's on the end's stubby beard's and no visible spur's these are no doubt yearling bird's. I say yearling bird's because a JAKE turkey is actually described as a male turkey with a beard that has not penetrated thru the front chest feather's yet. These have obviously penetrated thru but they are not tom's or two year old's.

I have never told a youth no to a big ole' loud mouth jake though hope he smashes one!
