Come up to the Katy NSTRA trial tomorrow. A picture is worth a 1000 words.

I just read a short article on how the US doesn't have a true versatile hunting breed that is near the level of some of the european breeds. I then started thinking, "Why not?" and here is what I came up with. To be a "versatile" hunting breed dogs in germany were bred to hunt birds (pointing and retreiving), small game, and maybe foxes (which is still mainly a hound thing). So I thought If you were to create a American Hunting Dog breed what would it need in terms of game efficiency? I would think skills would include pointing, retreiving, baying/treeing, trailing, running, protection and still have a indoor switch for the house dog mentality.
So here is my question. If you were to just name 5 dog breeds or less to combine to make these (assuming positive traits could be pulled only) what would they be?
Mine are: 1) Bluetick Coonhound (or Treeing Walker Hound) 2) GSP 3) Lab 4) German Shepherd 5) Beagle (to bring size back down a bit)

Angie- seen your op with the Chesapeake Bay retrievers, mom and dad are good looking dogs. I'll ask the same question I do my nephew, who has 2 CBRs, are you sure those aren't chocolate Labradoodles?

Angie, you take it better than my nephew...LOL. You people that have CBRs have your work cut out for you, they are great working dogs but man, they can be pretty obstinate. My nephews 2, Beau and D, sometimes question who is Alpha, especially old man Beau, but you wouldn't want it any other way.

My nephews 2, Beau and D, sometimes question who is Alpha, especially old man Beau, but you wouldn't want it any other way. You know I haven't found that to be the case. I've trained quite of few of them and I've found them very easy to train. You can't shove anything down their throat. You gotta give them time to get their brain around an idea and once they do they're good to go. My Chessie Bernie was the youngest dog to qualify for last years Master National. So he had to be easy. He was only 2 years old. Angie

Thanks Bill, we had a good time, I think the pups thought that quail was a toy. my wife threw out the wings on accident when she was reaching into the back seat cause one of the pups got sick (they are still really stressed in the car for some reason.) I'll see if I can get in touch with you next time for another.
Also wanted to say thanks for cleaning those birds for me. I'm gonna try cooking them tomorrow like you said.

You weren't dropped on your head when you were young, that is what we tell everybody anyway. I think it is a learning experience for him and he isn't a pro as yourself.

Bill, I just wanted to say thanks for cutting up those quail for us... we cooked them up as close to your directions as I could with my mediocre cooking skills. But they were delicious. My son and wife enjoyed them thoroughly.
