I've noticed this phenomena over the years and thought I'd get some theories from the collective THF brain trust. I lived adjacent to or near Bear Creek park in Grapevine for over a dozen years, and know for a fact it has a resident pack of coyotes. I've seen them and have them on game camera. And now I live in Argyle on several acres, and have game cam pic's of multiple yotes prowling my property. But I've never heard these suburban coyotes "sing" at night. Yet when I go to the hunting lease or spend a night out at the ranch, I get serenaded without fail. Is there a reason coyotes don't communicate this way in a suburban environment?

It used to be the same in the Hill Country and areas where the had lots of sheep and goats. I think all the years of trying eradicate them made the ones left keep quite. The only way they would howl was when you hit sirene to call cattle or was EMS vehicle on the highway with sirens on. Could also be less numbers of them had some effect also. It could be the howling at night has a lot to do with territory and communications among them on ranches. Might be they are just alerting each other as to where they will be hunting so the competition for food is less.

The ones in Dallas will sing if a fire truck is blaring at dusk. That's the only time I hear them. My friend hears them directly behind their house but it is a green belt that feeds into White Rock. They are spotted regularly on my street.

Hear them pretty often here in Houston. I'm thinking they stay in the woods around Memorial Park/Buffalo Bayou.

If they arent singing, its because they have adapted to keep quiet. Perhaps the loud ones have been shot/runoff/whatever, and the quiet ones stick around because they are "stealthy" for lack of a better term. no one/nothing knows they are living amongst a populated environment, so they are left alone (out of sight, out of mind).
Its just another form of natural selection, like the rattlesnake/hog theory. Rattlesnakes that rattle make noise, thus get eaten by hogs. Rattlesnakes that keep quiet are less likely to be eaten by hogs, thus forming a population of rattlesnakes that dont rattle.
I like spoonie, his humor is dryer than my duck lease.

Also think the higher concentration of domestic dogs has a part in it. Maybe all the non-coyotes joining in causes confusion and renders howling sessions a bad communication vehicle.

I think they still sing... it's just louder in a city... and you can't hear them from as far away.

I guess Corsicana is not a "city" because ours sing like crazy around the house-keeps all the dogs stirred up too....

I've heard them in Dallas. I think its a combination of other noises drowining them out and the yippin yote = dead yote theory.

Ours howl at night in Richardson, we're in a VERY Quiet area near Rowlett creek. I think the other noises may drown out the sound in some areas.
Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it. Don't text and drive.

I live off Matlock in SE Arlington... I hear them when the wind is out of the south. Usually see 1-2 a year in the neighborhood..... people think its the neighbors dog digging in their trash!
I'd ask him if he's pregnant. He missed a s__tload of periods. I'll take "things that look like a uterus" for $200 Alex.

They are too depressed to sing. I would be if I lived in a city.

In my neck of the woods I am woken up to them 2-3 times a night yippin n yappin n hollerin n howlin.
How can you expect them to sing when they are surrounded by sub woofers in cadillacs and grand marquis'? Those poor dallas yotes dont know what they listenin to!!

I live in Colleyville and see them traveling the railroad tracks behind my house every month or so. I've only heard them howling a handful of times in the 5 years we've lived there, but then again I'm not outside much at home like at the lease.
