I adopted a black lab from a shelter about 6 months ago and Ive noticed excessive shedding lately. Im wondering what kind of food you all feed your dogs and if you have any tips for reducing shedding. Thanks

shedding can be result of many issues. As you mention at times it can be related to food, alergies,
one suggestion is try adding fish oil additive to their food. Seems to add some nutrients and moisture to the skid possibly reducing shedding

Labs shed..several things you can do...Feed fish oil pills, once a day, get em at Wal-Mart/Sams Club. Brush your lab with a plastic tipped wire brush a couple times a week. Shampoo once a month using red Dawn dish detergent.Feed a dog food that has no corn filler (Blue Buffalo, Taste Of The Wild,Diamond Naturals) Get it at Tractor Supply Stores. None of the above is expensive (except for the food)

As soon as winter is over and spring begins to turn warm, they will shed. If they didnt they would overheat due to all the hair in the Summer heat. It is just part of having a dog. Now after they lose their winter coat you can help out by doing many of the ideas above. However, it is just a fact that you will have to deal with about twice a year....

Yep, occasionally all that lush shiny black coat will turn dull and lifeless, and you'll need to strip out gobs and gobs of it to get back down to the pretty stuff. This is over and above all the normal shedding they do. I can't say it happened twice a year on mine, but it did occasionally. Now if your dog is balding under where you strip it out, then it may be an allergy to food, or flea treatment.

Take him to the groomer for a bath and fluff every 6 weeks. It's the best $35 you have ever spent. They will strip the coat for you. Do Not get them shaved!!!

Furminator. But it's not a food. I went and bought one of these today. Did both my black Labs and dang, what a bunch of dead hair it takes off! Thanks for the heads up, we have wood and stained concrete floors, I was wearing out brooms keeping up with shed hair.

I laugh when folks who've never had a Lab tell me they heard Labs don't shed. Boy are THEY in for a surprise!

Oh, I have had several Labs, I just never looked into what to do about it. I was thinking of weaving my own sweaters with it!

I've tried all of the above and the truth is Labs are going to shred. At least that's been my experience but you can minimize by weekly brushings.
Don't talk the talk if you didn't walk the walk.

These are all great points. More grooming and fish oil are really your best two options.

All the dogs are blowing their coats early this year. Must be in for a bad winter. X2 on the Furminator.
