Need some help/guidance here. I have two issues with my lab. 1 - she will fetch all day long inside, but the minute I take her outside, she does not want to do it. 2- if I attach a wing to toy she will not retrieve or play with it, but once I take the wing off she likes it again. Thoughts?

She will be a year old in late April and we have had her since mid/late June.

Either force fetch or hold conditioning. Then she will fetch, hold and return whatever you send her after.

You need to get some live birds to see if the dog has an interest in birds. There is no since in force fetching a dog that ultimately doesn't like birds and will not be birdy enough to make a good retriever. As far as force fetching the dog that is not a one step cure all solution. You need to train your dog in a step by step progression not just jump to force fetch before the dog has had any other training. You won't be able to learn how to FF through a PM someone needs to show you. Also you should buy some quality training videos after you do an intro to birds and believe the dog is birdy enough to make a decent retriever.

This is not something you can be walked thru via the internet or phone, whether you go with force fetch or hold conditioning. I was just suggesting that those are two ways to get the dog to fetch & hold consistently. Aside from going outside, what else is changing when you are setting up the retrieve? This is something I've dealt with successfully many times, but usually it's much better to assess when actually watching the dog so that an accurate read can be made as to what is causing the disconnect.

I wish it was all butterfly's and rainbows,,, but serious retriever training is anything but. Angie

Why worry about the dog retrieving a bird until force fetch is complete?
Best thing would to get with a pro, offer to throw birds for help with training your dog.
Videos and books skip alot of information.

Why bother force fetching a dog that wont retrieve naturally, that's just asking for trouble. The dog needs to retrieving before you force fetch otherwise you are spending time training a dog that ultimately won't be fit for the job.

It appears that you have done more "In-House' retrieving than necessary. Before you drop some serious bucks on professional trainers , try this.
Throw ONE retrieving dummy in the house, when she retrieves it, lay on the heavy praise AND IMMEDIATELY GO OUTSIDE and throw the dummy. It may take several days for her to get the idea.
I would get her retrieving the dummy, sans wing feathers until she is solid with the dummy, then add feathers.

I must be doing something wrong then. I don't introduce them to birds until after the double T. Some didn't have as much desire as I like,but Never had one not pick up a bird.

When you hear hoofbeats think horses not zebras. Have you ruled out all of the small things first? She still has puppy mentality. Are their a lot of distractions outside? People walking noises, smells? Try taking her somewhere secluded and make it a big fun game. Maybe you're putting too much pressure once you step outside. Take her favorite toy and throw it a couple of times and then switch the toy with the bumper when she's excited and in the moment.

Have you tried teasing with the wing on a string? Another retrieving approach is in the water cause she don't have a choice in not returning to shore. Good luck and hope this helps

I had one Yellow Lab that was a great retriever. She would pick up doubles like it was nothing.. Then I found out she just did't feathers!
