I am getting ready to plant some food plots, can I fertilize and plant at the same time or do I need to do one at a time? If they have to be done one at time how long do I need to wait before planting?

Do you have a soil test? The soil test will also tell you exactly what is needed for what you are planting. When to add the fertilizer needed depends on what your soils are needing added.

I am just trying to get this done in one trip, it is quite a haul for me to go down there multiple times. I only go about 2 times a year for hunting. If I can do it all in one pass it would give me time to plant a little more. I was hoping to plant 50 acres. If I have to plow then fertilize then plant I will only be able to do about 25 acres.

What I am saying is if it is not as effective I would rather do less. But if there is not much difference I will do it all at once.

You will need to probably spread out the fertilizer then plow it up really good the first time. I would then plant after that and not cover to deep whatever you are planting. I would plant less acres correctly than plant all of it poorly. You will get a better stand when it is done correct IMO.

Ok, that is exactly what I wanted to know. How long should I wait between fertilizer and seed, would a couple of months be to long. I am heading up there in July and would go back and plant in early september.

Depends on the fertilizer you are needing to put out. Putting down fertilizer in July will be ok if you need a lot of phosphorus and potash as it takes longer to breakdown and get into the soil. If you are only putting out nitrogen then do it when you seed in Sept so if it does rain anytime before you plant it won't be used up by any unwanted plants that come back before you plant your plot. A lot people do fertilizer and seed at the same time when they plant. I would still preplow to allow the weeds to be knocked back and if you do get rain then it will be stored in ground without anything growing on it.

Ok, thanks. Are you familiar with the centerville area? That is where the land is.

If so what do you recomend planting. I have a disc harrow I pull behind my Mule and a harrow rake. I have more equip here but it is to far to drag a tractor.

If your planting that much talk to the closest feed/fertilize store and get a buggy or truck to bring it out allready blended, seed and fertilize, they will do a good job and know what works best in your area. Just be sure you have a well prepared seedbed and you will need to be there when they do it to disk it in. Then all you have to do is pray for rain. Good luck.

Not familiar with that area but winter peas, oats and wheat do well for fall plantings all over. If you are going to plow 50 acres with a mule and a disc in a weekend that will be some feat.
