Are you looking for caliber or style. You will get many different answers. The 2 I use the most are my Win 94 trapper 44mag and my AR15 in 6.8. Most any rifle out there will do equally well for hog and deer. Even a Marlin or Winchester 30/30 fills the bill.

Hard to beat a good bolt action 270 Winchester, 280 Remington or a 7mm Remington Mag for anything you hunt in Texas.

270, 30-06. Both great hunting rounds for anything in Texas plus some, and ammo is fairly easy to come by for both of these, especially now. Seems like all i see is 270 and 30-06 on the shelves aside from WSM's.

You said at a reasonable price, so i'm going to go with 30-30. You can easily find one in great condition for 400 bucks, and ammo is still ample, $10.49 a box at Walmart.
Also, with Hornady's new 160 FTX bullets, you can effectively reach out to about 200 yards.

Wow. Broad question. IMO if you want to have fun exploring your options check out any good bolt action from .25-06 up to .300 WM depending on your recoil sensitivity.( Stay away from the ultra cheapo rifle/combo setups.) If you want a short answer get a Remington 700 variant in your price range in .270 WM or .30-06.

I recently got a package deal of a Savage Model 11 thxp with a nikon scope. The only upgrade I did was spend $40 on Talley rings. So including the rings, combo and FFL fee, I paid about $515 for the rifle and it was good enough for my little lady (who's a fairly decent shot) to hit a 12oz coke can at 271 yards. I suggest you at least check out the package. It's fairly basic and not going to win any beauty contest, but it's accurate and won't break the bank. it also comes in 270, which is a great caliber to start building a rifle collection.

Well if you have a 3006 you don't need a 270.
Get something in short action. I would normally suggest a 308 which is the best all around (on average) but this time I will recommend the THF kool aid round 7mm08. You could also do 243.

7-08 or 260 in a nice handy sized rifle would be a good choice.
If a fair amount of smaller varmints are on the menu, a 243 is very versatile, especially with the great hunting bullets available these days, as well as light varmint type for the small critters.

It is hard to argue against a 308 as an all around caliber..

308 is great but I would stay away from just because ammo is so hard to find anytime there is a scare

I like the 308 alot Bud's gun shop (online) has the package he is talking about, for a great price. Savage model 11 with a Nikon scope in .308. Better price than Cabelas or Bass Pro.

Bud's is exactly where I got the rifle. At the time it was like $440 for it with free shipping as long as u use a debit card. In case u want to know, I got the rings from SWFA.

Any quality bolt gun, I'd opt for .308 or .25-06 personally.

7 Rem Mag or 300 Win Mag. Ammo prices are decent and there is still plenty on the shelf even in the current ammo crisis. Also plenty of different loads to choose from and pleny of power to take down just about anything you want to hunt within reason.

30-378 go big or go home. Notice he said an all around rifle not an ego booster. 25-06 would be my choice. Guys up north hunt elk with this round. With a Premium bullet and good shot placement the 25-06 will take anything from varmint to elk size game cleanly.
