Hopefully in about 2 mos, I'll have my one and only litter from old Hunter. He's a Black lab that retrieves and points and did it on his own..still a young 13 even with white toes and a muzzle..He bred a yellow lab female I purchased to breed to him that descends from some of Coach Derrys dogs..I can't find his papers..so these pups will not be registered..but will be free. So if interested and the litter hits..just contact me and I'll make arrangements on any pups here that any of you may want..I'll give them the first shots and worm them, but when you take them..that's it..for free..I'm not into guarantees..DD

I'm glad for you Don. Glad this worked out, I know you've been wanting to get a next gen pup from your hunting buddy. Nice honest post there, too... and there are always folks who want a hunting buddy but the budget isn't there. It's nice they'll get that chance. Good deal - and good luck!

The Sire came from a young man who worked part time at the Vet Clinic and lived in a community over by Seguin..He was saving for his College Funds..The mother is directly bred down from Coach Mike Derry's dogs here in Bandera and Medina..He competition shows them..I misplaced Hunters papers years ago, am not raising or selling pups and kept him because he hunts, no BS, no health problems, not gun shy, and he started pointing as soon as I hunted quail with him and some Pointers..I quit commercially raising dogs and competition hunting years ago..So when a person gets one of my pups, I've got at least $150 or more in it..this isn't free to me..Don

No problem Cole..Hunter came from New Berlin..Old Age got me too and I think the family I got him from was named "Bader"..I remember the young man was a very nice 10-13 yrs old and was saving for college..he said Hunters father was about 90lbs..Hunter has an exceptional looking head, but usually ran about 72lbs most of his life..He's getting a little long in the tooth, as am I now..DD

I figure by May 1st I should know if we are going to have pups and how many..she had 10 good pups last yr...and I got a real bad case of Parvo in the litter, even though I'd given them shots..lost 6 good pups..I have two of her 1/2 pointer/lab pups with her now..and at 10 mos they are taller than their Mom..Yellow w/some white trim from the pointer..she had one black pup from where Hunter got her..and I spent several hundred dollars trying to save them all to no avail..I gave two of these 4 left to members last yr..and have the last two..who really do hunt..I'd never thught to cross a Pointer and Lab..DD

Don, Was your dog AKC registered? Scroll to the breed and enter the first word or two of your dog's registered name in the search on this form. I tested it by putting in Lagniappe's Blazing and Vermilion Dash and the full name and AKC number of both my dogs came up. Then you could pass that info on if the persons you give pups to want to pursue registration for entering in hunt tests and such. http://classic.akc.org/store/reports/dog/search/dog_search.cfm?basic=yes

To protect the new litter, make sure you don't put the new pups on any dirt where the pups with parvo were. On the non-porous or cement surfaces, bleach - bleach - bleach OR use Roccal (but it's like $100/gallon - we use it, but then again, we run a full time kennel.) Use powder or crystal chlorine (pool chemicals) on the dirt. It will burn the grass to nothing, but worth it for the new pups. Destroy or thoroughly disinfect any kennels, crates, bowls, etc. that the other pups used - or better yet - destroy & replace them. At 5-1/2 to 6 weeks of age, give a high-titer shot to the new litter. Vanguard is a good one. Don't assume the shot is working until 7-10 days later. Keep pups in deep quarantine. When mama goes outside and then comes back in, clean her paws, underbelly and teats so that should she come in contact with a virus, she won't transmit to the pups. Contact me if you have any questions or need help to protect the new litter.

You can also take a small pan or litter box and place a towl in it. Pour some bleach water over the towel in the box. Any time you walk from the property to where the pups are step into the box to disinfect your shoes. You can also make mom walk through it to keep from tracking it into the kennel. Just don't use a whole lot of bleach to keep from burning her pads.

Also treat or replace all cleaning supplies... brooms, mops, etc.

I've lived here 20 plus years and at times had over 30 dogs on site and raised multiple litters and never had one sick animal until that Parvo..Vet said it could have been a neighbors dog or someones animal going down to the Medina River, ect..We bought a new Drathaar Pup this past wkend at the SAXET Gun Show and the breeder hadn't given any shots, or apparently wormed..so I gave him shots on the way home..wormed x day..had spagetti ..now he's a household terror..and he's takeing my wife's Eng. Mastiffs on.. I will carry him to the vet Friday, and get another vet adm shot when we carry Miller, my male Mastiff.has ear problems this time of yr..DD

I hear ya, Don. I assume the worst on my place with coyotes, foxes and other assorted varmin always present. Can't take a pup from point A to point B without crossing paths with one thing or another that's been thru here. Vaccines. Lots of vaccines... lol

A neighbors dog can track it on their feet, you can even pick it up on the soles of your shoes. I couldn't believe that the vet told me the other day that you should be giving a combo shot every 3 weeks until they're 7-8 mo old.
