Yesterday my wife and I drove down to the Bishop Arts District of Dallas to try out Lockhart Smokehouse. It opened last year and we kept meaning to go down there, but never got around to it. The lady that opened the restaurant is related to the Schmidts that own Kreuz Market in Lockhart and she has a contract with them to sell their sausage at this restaurant.

For meat, we ordered ½ pound of lean brisket, ½ pound of shoulder clod, two spare ribs, and two Kreuz sausages (one original and one jalapeno cheese). For sides, we got “Lockhart Slaw” and Mac n’ Cheese. All the meat is served on butcher paper with slices of white bread. The brisket was fantastic and was probably the best brisket I have had in the DFW area. The shoulder clod had a good smoky beef flavor and had a texture that reminded me of prime rib. The ribs were perfectly seasoned and tasted great. The sausage tasted just like the sausage you would get at Kreuz Market. My wife wasn’t a big fan of the sausage, but I particularly liked the flavoring of the jalapeno and cheese variety. The cole slaw was average, but the mac n’ cheese was top shelf.

I really enjoyed Lockhart Smokehouse and plan to go back. While it may not be quite as good as Smitty’s or Kreuz Market, it is still really good barbecue and rivals the best I have had in the DFW area.

You know you can order those links for 1.75 a piece straight from Kruez and keep them in the freezer.Thats what I do...I just cant bring myself to pay the 5.00 they get for those rings when they still sell them for 1.80 at the store....I was really disappointed in the place...15.00 dollars for a lb of brisket...They gave me the whole "they were raised in the original store" but when I asked for a "dry hot" link they looked at me like I was crazy....I just feel like if you are gonna use the name you better put out a GREAT product...

I went today and was not impressed.... They don't distinguish between moist and lean brisket, you just get what the have on the block. I always order brisket off the fatty point at kreuz but today at lsh I had to pay premium price for meat from the flat.... I have no reason to go back.

Most BBQ is subpar in Dfw so I can agree that this place is good for Dfw but disappointing for a Central TX BBQ maven haha

Maybe you guys happened to catch a bad day? I absolutely love this place! I've been 7-8 times in the last 2 months and its been very consistent.. I always order moist brisket, extra bark and they do an excellent job giving me exactly that. A co-worker orders lean and the guys obviously know what they're doing butchering it. I've never been to any of the famous Lockhart places, but this is hands down the best brisket I've had and I've eaten a ton of brisket. Also, if you like pork, the chops are excellent as are the beans.

I actually had brisket and pork chops from there tonight.

I enjoy this place every once in a while (mainly due to cost). Good BBQ imo. The brisket is nice and tender. I hate getting bbq that is stringy and tough, and is chopped up and doused with sauce. That is why I like this brisket. Sliced and served the way I want. On their site they say let them know how you want your brisket cut (lean or fatty and more bark or not), so if they are giving grief for a request then that should be brought to their attention. As for the sausage OMG I love it! I know it is not the original but they are delicious and the best in the area. Tuesday is 2 for 1 so its like getting each ring for $2.50.

Bottom line is that for bbq starved dallas, this is an oasis. Pecan lodge may be the best bbq in the area, but as long as i keep reading about long waits, poor customer service, and limited hours and availability of food, ill stick with lockhart.

and before it is mentioned, I know most of the reviews are great, but it seems like a pain in the [censored] to get since my schedule conflicts with theirs.

I only lie when I tell the truth.
