There is nothing in the world like the sound of a pump shotgun being racked. It is the ultimate universal language to tell home invaders that they just screwed up and picked the wrong house.
I never really understood this ^. 1st, if I rack my home defense shotgun I've just jacked a round to the floor. Why keep the chamber empty and be one round short. 2nd, The first and last thing I want a home invader to hear is the sound of the round being fired. X2 If I were a home invader and heard a shotgun being wracked, I'd be sending a couple rounds in your direction before you were done making your noise.

I keep a glock with extended threaded bbl with flashhider, night sites, and a 65 lumen weapons light attached. I think any quality firearm that you are compatent with will work, but the attached weapons light is extremely nice at 3am when you have just been woke up by an odd noise- before that I had a 3 cell mag light on te nightstand the attached light is much better for me. Just something to think about... If you are an armed home invader, and see a flashlight, what are you going to shoot at? Our natural instinct is to shoot directly at the light. For this reason, tactical lights mounted to your weapon are a bad idea. Police are trained (at least I was) to hold their maglights away from their body while performing tactical sweeps in dark areas. If shots are fired at them, they will likely shoot at the light source and if it's held away from the body, you will likely not get shot in a vital organ.

At home I use a laser on the FNH 5.7 x 28. I prefer a hand held light Have you ever shot you 5.7 inside?? I have shot mine outside with ears on, and I can’t imagine what it would be like shooting it indoors. Heck, there was a fireball about a foot big in daylight. I wouldn’t mind using this round for home defense, but I won’t use this pistol inside until I put a suppressor on it.

KelTec Sub2000 in 9 MM with a 33 round Glock mag. Compact, with lazer and light will rain down terror on the bad guy. Also have a 12 gauge loaded with 00 buck.
Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

my wife has a snub nosed 38 in the drawer. if somebody is breaking into my house, or worse, is already inside. im grabbing my AK w/ tac light and 40rd mag full of hollow points.
I make it a point to atleast once a week shut off every light in the house, and sweep the house so im used to picking up objects in the dark, as well as entering and clearing rooms with the rifle. Overkill? probably, but being well trained will never cost you your life, being undertrained is likely to cause it.
We have a plan in place since one night last year i thought somebody was in the house, and i made alot of terrible decisions in how I handled it, including walking through the house with my shotgun in one hand at my side, and letting my wife walk behind me as i cleared the house. Stupid decisions that could have cost every one of us our lives. It wont happen again.
Even if you dont have time or money to go to the range and train, please take the time to train at home. Im thinking about getting an Airsoft AK to train force on force.

No, just plain weird.
When, I should say if it ever hits the fan, all that stuff will probably go out the window as it will be very different during the real thing. Lots of chaos and craziness going on, oh and things you didn't plan for will probably happen too.

Seems weird to me to load a handgun, stick it in a drawer, and never think about it til the time comes when you may need it. Better to be prepared that caught off guard.

Cant believe no one has said anything about the .357 Sig. Don't have it personally, but shot a friends in a Sig Sauer P226 and I don't think there would ever be a need for a different handgun.

What's everyone's opinion on the best handgun caliber for home defense? My full sized .45 does a fine job of punching big holes as fast as I can empty the mag. Everyone who has shot it immediately sports a nice smile. Pleasure to shoot, hits dead center with ease. Shotgun is nearby as well, but I can bring the 45 to action in seconds from a dead sleep...so that's my first grab.
