Hey y'all,
Can anyone give some feedback on the Mossberg 500?
I havent held a shotgun in years, and I'm thinking of getting one. I've heard good things about it.
The main use for it will be home defense, but I'm considering maybe for hunting also.
Cost is a big factor, and my planned max budget is around $500.
Thanks in advance

If you are paying 500 for a mossberg 500 you paid to much. Walmart can be had for 209 and 249 depending in chamber 3" or 3.5". They are cheap, feel cheap but do what they are intended to do, shoot.

great shotguns for the money. you can get replacement barrels for a little under 100 if i remember right, so get the 20" barrel for HD and the 28" for hunting. still come out under $350

I bought a good used on for $160. It shoots great, never had a problem. I'd buy one again, but not for $500.

Shot a composite 500 since I was 12, thing nearly pumps itself now it's so word out but I've never had one problem. I don't even know how to take it apart, the only cleaning its ever gotten was a little rem oil in the action...I bet it's disgusting inside

Okay thanks again y'all For sure, my max spending limit is $500. But I was also trying to get the most for my money and I saw these Mossberg 500s at academy: http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores...2025+4294951388I really like those shoulder stock + pistol grip ones.

They are great guns and it's my opinion that Mossberg got the safety setup right.

That would be ideal for HD, but expect to get laughed at if you whip that bad boy out on a milo field come September...

Is the breecher choke a screw in choke, or is the barrel made that way? Can't really tell from the pic and the specs Academy gives don't say either way. OP, in my opinion, you would be wasting money to buy that particular shotgun. For less money, you can get a Mossberg 500 with a standard stock and two barrels, one for hunting with chokes, and one 18" cylinder bore for HD. That will serve any purpose you would need, and do everything that this "tactical" shotgun can do. If you must have one with a pistol grip setup like this, go with a Remington 870, due to the location of the safety.

Have a Tactical Turkey Mossberg that I inheireted. It is my home defense shotgun and stays loaded with OO buck. Yeah, I trust my life to it.
I've got "fancy shotguns" but this one is always handy and ready for whatever situation I throw it into.
My ONLY objection is the plastic safety slider switch. You can get an aftermarket metal one if you want and I think about it often but it just works so why bother.

They make a ton of variations. Some of their tactical models go all the way up to 9 round capacity. Those are kind of pricey.

I would buy a 870, they are better made and will hold up to use alot better. Theres more options available for barrels and scope mounts, etc for the 870. We can only use shotguns here in Iowa for deer and i have used both but wouldnt trade my 870 for anything. Just my 2 cents.

I have a 590A1 Mossberg which is a tactical 500. It is a 9 shot and has a bayonet lug and swivel sling mounts. They are generally reserved for the Marine Corp. My son in law had connections to get me one. For HD, it is perfect. As far as accessories are concerned, there is nothing that you can do to a 870 that you cannot do to a 500. IMO Remington 870's cost more off the shelf is the only real difference. As for which one holds up best is any ones guess. They are both excellent shotguns.

There are even multiple versions of the 590a1. Buds Gun Shop sells them but they're out of stock now. Last week they had them in stock. Mossberg 590a1

Mossberg 590a1 Yep, biggest difference between the 500 and 590a1 is that you can open the magazine tube on the 590a1 at the muzzle end and remove the spring and follower...easier to clean and replace parts in the field for military. But the 590a1 is in no way restricted to military. Anyone with an internet connection or a good gun shop can get one.

Isn't the barrel on the 590s heavier than on a 500?

Pump shotguns don't get any better than a Mossy 500, just more expensive. They will go bang every time you pull the trigger.

870 is a piece of crapola, matt finish will rust the first tine out and get worse after that, 870 no likey to cylce either. mossy 500 is the way to go, even the maverick 88 is better than the 870. brother has a 25 year old mossy still runnin strong. the safety is definately in the right place for wing shootin.

Love the mossberg 500. It is a good, reliable, low priced shotgun with almost unlimited accessories.
