I bought my son a WWII Mosin Nagant for his birhday last year because he'd been wanting one for a while, and bought it at a local shop for $149. With a hard case and 60 rounds of ammo, it was still less than $200! I asked him about it the other day, and he said that despite being a cheap "junk" surplus rifle, it was really pretty accurate and there are lots of inexpensive ways to modify it and make it into a nice, powerful, accurate hunting rifle.
So I got to looking around, and sure enough, you can buy nice modern stocks for them, scopes, suppressors, the whole 9 yards - and for pretty darned cheap!
So I was wondering if anyone here hunts or has hunted with a modified Mosin Nagant?

Yes, the 7.62x54R is a good hunting round. Very close to the 30-06 in capability.
Who knows about your gun but the caliber is a fine choice...

Yes, I have a Mosin - it was a war trophy my Dad brought back from Vietnam. I don't hunt with mine, however, you'll find a few guys on this forum who DO hunt with Mosin Nagants. As you said, they are cheap, but can be sporterized into a pretty accurate hunting rifle. And you can dispatch animals with the bayonette, if needed. Good luck.

Very possible.
I put an S&K scout scope mount and LER scope on mine and am very happy. No permanent mod required.

Not a Moisin, but I've taken a few deer with my cheap $60 M48. A friend and his 3 boys hunt with Turk Mausers. The old surplus rifles are great for hunting, even in original form.

I saw my dad shoot a doe at 150 yds with one with open sites when I was about 6. She dropped right where he shot her and 30 years later I still remember it as one of the best shots I've ever seen!

Simo Hayha (White Death) used a modified one in WWII. Interesting reading.

I hunted with an M-44 for several years using a B-Square scout mount and an old Tasco Trophy series 2.5x20 pistol scope. Took deer anywhere from 50 to 275 yds with it and never had one run more than 10-15 yds.

I hunted with Mosin this past season (killed two does with it); I purchased it in the spring of last year; added ATI stock as well as ATI scope mount and ATI bolt; ATI scope mount and bolt work was done by my friend who has a machine shop, he also modified the ATI scope mount; I kept original stock and bolt untouched so I can always return it to the original form.
I got lucky… since rifle was purchased on line and I was not sure what I will get.. I ended up with 1932 in great condition rifle. With white box Winchester ammo ( 180 gr) it groups about .75 inch at 100 yards.. not too bad for 1891 design and 1932 military rifles that went through hell in WWII.
The rifle and cartridge itself has unparalleled world history; Mosin rifle was used in WWI, WWII and still in usetoday by rebels in many parts of the world; Mosin caliber 7.62x54 is the longest living cartridge ever used by military.. Starting 1891 to present... Russia still has the same round in use today as a sniper round;
Ballistic it very close to 30-06, but Mosin rifle excels with heavy bullets and long ranges (under 1000 meters) , partly because of rifling twist (1 to 9.5), very deep rifling and their long barrels; I would venture to say that 7.62x54 was prerunner for many cartridges we know today: ..303. 308, 30-06, .303 etc.
Sorry for the long post… but Mosin has special sentimental value for me: one of my granddads was killed in 1941 and another went through 4 years of WWII holding Mosin rifle;
In any way, best of luck to OP if you decide to get one.

I just shot mine for the first time yesterday. After adjusting the sights I got a pattern no bigger than a quarter at about 75 yards. Good enough for me considering I've never shot open sights.
I'm about to sell my sks back to my father in law and buy another mosin.

I guess I am safe to assume that your ansestors come from the Old Country, correct? To OP: it is very doable. Get prone or with tripod. It is a very potent round, so be aware of what is behind you game. Keep in mind that bid Red Deer will have a thru hole, even if you hit shoulder or leg bone. It will go thru, taking both leg/shoulder bones, 3-5 ribs, and will kill the deer that stands right next to you intended target. That did not quite happen, but bullet went thru deer and thru 7" diameter tree trunk. 7.62x54r, 204gr, 150 yards. Good luck, stay safe and bring food home.

I haven't hunted with mine....yet. I just got me a PU sniper version, so I have no plans on altering anything.
I'd try shooting it how it is. You may be surprised. My plain, non-sniper one shot fifty cent piece groups at 100 meters. I think it would be a shame to alter a perfectly good rifle. But to each his own.
Have fun!

I haven't yet. Have you seen the new Archangel stock with the removeable 10 round magazine? Amazing! Once I get that installed, my Mosin will be an excellent hunter. http://cheaperthandirt.com/blog/?p=38043

I did not hunt with it but got to target practice with my nephew's Mosin Nagant. Pretty neat gun! Very accurate gun!

If by Old Country you meant Russia, than yes, your assumption is correct  And actually it is not just my ancestors are from there I came from Russia as well.. about 20 years ago.. One of the best decisions I have made in my life for my family and myself; Very proud to be an American! Unfortunately, not really happy with current US president … but that is totally different subject…

I have a few Mosins. I have taken a doe or two with an original PU sniper that I bought from Dennis Kroh several years ago for a pretty penny before all the put together imports flooded us. I liked shooting with that post reticle so much that the last modern scope I bought which was for a muzzleloader I ordered with a European post reticle. I have hunted with a M39 as well. I put the M39 Finnish Mosins right up there with Swedish Mausers and Swiss Schmidt Rubens in the most acurate surplus rifle category.

Buddy of mine has taken a handful of hogs and deer over the last few years on our place. Open sights. One shot drops in tracks. Mosins are killers in capable hands.
His first few harvests were with factory ammo. He reloads now and is about 2 MOA at 100 yards with open sights and the original trigger.

I have a bunch of cabela's bucks and I have been thinking about using them on a Mosin. If you decide to buy Mosin from Cabelas (or anywhere else) I would recommend looking for one made before 1941; during WWII the quality of those rifles was not as good as pre-war time; M39 version of those rifles are also very desirable as they were “re-done” by Finnish gun manufactures (SAKO, TIKKA, etc) as late as 1972; Good luck with any direction you decide on!

I have to disagree. A friend of a friend had a hex receiver blow up in his face. After hearing that I think the mosin in general is a solid gun and you can't go strictly off the date. He had a later model factory refurb that still shoots amazing.

Or the round,ie modern BrownBear hunting rounds, 204 gr could create an undue pressure in that old chamber. or some dirt or cosmoline got into chamber in front of bullet. Or plain old metal fatigue of overused rifle. Never know. Stay safe.

He had a later model factory refurb that still shoots amazing. I would say it was possibly related to the wrong headspace (mismatched bolts vs the rifle), incorrect firing pin protrusion (incorrectly set by whoever reassembled the bolt after cleaning it) or possibly surplus round itself… I have done very extensive research before getting Mosin and I could not find one case where “mishap” with Mosin would be related to the rifle itself… considering quantities of those rifles that is pretty good record.. I am not trying to diminish your story from “friend of a friend” I am just expressing my knowledge and personal experience. There is no doubt that quality of Mosin rifles built by Russia in pre-war was better than during WWII (for obvious reasons), that is not just my opinion that is a fact; you can very easily see it when you have both rifles in front of you.

The best shooter I ever had was an 1894 Chat.It's bore looked like the surface of the Moon but after some shooting, all the pits filled in with copper and it came around nicely. I've sold or traded all of them except my M39. It's a 1941 VKT barrel on an 1894 receiver. And I consider it fully capable of killing any animal on the North American continent.
Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.
