I have a Remington 5R 20" barrel 11.25 twist rate. Have any of you guys worked up a load using 165 nosler partition or 168 barns tipped TSX. I am going to roll a few but wanted to check if any of you have done it yet and see what worked best for you. Thanks for the input.

It would be the same for most any other 308 with those bullets. Varget and R15 are good picks. What powders do you have to work with?

I use Varget in my .308. I was able to find a very accurate load with little effort, so I haven't found a reason to try another powder.

Somewhere between 44 and 46 grains of Varget will yield very good results with either of those bullets. Work up a good load, and it should shoot bug holes.

I did 30 rounds yesterday w/primarily LC or Mil brass, 210 Fed Match primers and 42.-grains of RL 15, 51 gr of H 380, and 47.5
grains of Varget..I got inhole..one hole only groups w/all three
at 100 yds w/ Sierra 165 BT Game Kings..I used the RL 15 on some
168 Sierra Match..and worst group I got was in about a nickle on
inside..others above a nickle would cover w/room on the edge..But
my factory Fed Match 175 Sierra BT still group better than any of
the above..The TRG did put all 6 different loads and some different brass..30 rounds in same place on the target..and every
one you could have hit a deer in the head with..DD

I'm shooting through a factory SPS Tactical and the best load I have found is 178 AMAX ahead of 44.5 gr Varget. 5 Shot groups under 1/2" with best under .3.

I aint got much on the 308 load data, but if this is a hunting bullet I would be leaning away from the barnes, too slow a round to run them for me, the partition should give you much more reliable expansion.

That's interesting... I will have to do some research.

I have a Remington 700 VTR with 5r rifling, not the 5r 20" model, but similar twist and barrel length.

The 5r as well as my rifle are pretty notorious for liking light loads. Mine likes 42.5gr of Varget on 168gr SMK and 150gr Speer Soft Point Boat Tails. Not a lot of velocity, but good accuracy.

Mine has a 20" barrel too and I get exactly 100fps off the Federal 168gr gmm rated at 2650fps (I get 2550fps). What I have is a pretty good 800y plinker and 300-350y hunting rifle IMO.

You can push it out to 1000y with major load development (rl17=not for me), or maybe off the shelf Hornady Superperformance.
