Last night, the pigs came at 0230 and of course, today was no different, but this time I was ready. I got a call from my partner to go back out after getting skunked last night and missing the pigs by 2 hours. This time we did a 12 hour sit and I was back in the same spot overlooking a series of drainage ponds with a feed box about 30m away from my direct front. I watched him come in from the back of the pond and then across the snow to get to the box. This was an eager beaver, and he wasn't at all cautious. We don't put a lot of pressure on these pigs, and when they smell the corn, they just go at it. I waited for him to open the box, and he put his head down to eat a little. He picked his head up just slightly, and gave me a good look at where I wanted to place the bullet, and I shot him just behind the ear with a .308 from my Kecler & Koch SLB 2000+. The bullet went in, hit the neck and then fragmented sending lead through the vitals. We brought him to our hut, opened him up and put him on the scale where he came in at 46Kg, or 101lbs. He will be sold to a restaurant, and I should be able to get the cutters from him for my wall. Here are some photos: and another one: last one: Waidmannsheil from Germany!

the land owner gets about $6 a lb for a whole cleaned hog. This hog will go for about $480 (100 lbs and about 20lbs bone loss). a bigger one can go for up to $500.00, one I shot in September was 200 lbs and we got 300 euros for it.

Wow, they bring good money!!! Yes they do, and that is why a lease here goes for 1-3000 euros per year. The lease system here is set up for only wealthy people to have them. I get lucky because I can hunt with these guys, and I don't have to buy the meat, but I get the trophies. They sell them basically before they're even shot.

Nice pig and story, what are you holding in your hand in the pictures? That is called an "Anschussbruch" or shooter's branch in German. Here in Germany, we give the animal a "last bite" which we call a letzterbissen and place it in his mouth. The owner of the hunting area will take another branch from a pine or oak dependent on the type of forest and will place it on top of the shot to get some blood on it, and then present it to the hunter who killed the game. This one happens to be a spruce branch because of the forest I was in. Hunting here has quite a bit of tradition that goes back to the middle ages, and I think we all have our own hunting traditions with something to do after the kill.
