Do you worry about how well your decoys are painted? This will be the first year I've hunted "public ducks" as in the past I've always hunted private. Decoys and the calls, IMO, are there to get the passing duck's attention and get them turned your way. When I look at real ducks on the water from 100+ yards out, they just look dark or silhouetted. I have a bunch of old dekes and I'll probably touch up the paint, but I don't think I will get OCD about it. What do you do? Keep your dekes looking really well or just touch them up once a year or so?

Just touch them up once in a while when they start to lost there bright look. Every couple or three years will work. I'm not one that has to have every little detail touched up.

I hunt over mine for several years...put them on the THF classfieds sell them and buy some new ones...
By the time you spend the money for paint and time you can get new ones cheaper!!!!!!
Just my thoughts...
BTW...hunting public for ducks you need to be a step above the private...
Lord knows they are different birds! LOL...

...but my private ducks didn't have hunters spaced out every 100 yards with decoy spreads. I was the only one with decoys on the whole lake. Same wild birds, just more spreads to choose from on the public waters, which is why I wondered if the paint was more critical. The old country ducks didn't have so many "friends" to choose from.

We typically touch up the goose spread, since this takes so many dekes. But for ducks once they have been thru hell its time to sell.

Hi, We have used the same decoys for 20+ years. I really feel like as long as the blocks are moving we are ok. On a still day we always have a jerk cord.

If they are getting old and chalky, just spray some armorall or tire spray on them and let them hang in the garage overnight. Should make them like new again. Also try a dab of vasoline on the drakes heads and it makes them shine. (no jokes... i'm being serious)

Turn them every 2 years, you can get 30%-50% of the $ for the used ones and buy new ones. Never will have a problem that way!

I've heard, don't remember where, (maybe an RNT cd) that don't worry about the greens and other colors except for white. If there is white on the deeks touch that up.

I pretty much agree with J.J. Don't know that perfect paint on your dekes is "critical," but I beleive good realistic decoys can help, and of course that means a well painted decoys. Sure can't hurt.
As far as touch up. I am with J.J. When they get to looking too rough, I get rid of 'em. Plastic dekes are cheap enough and I am usually only using between 2 and 4 dozen at the most. Just don't have the time to try an re-paint a spread of decoys. If they were nice foamers or something I would consider it. A few Hundred bucks or so for a few dozen G&H dekes ain't too bad of an expense, plus they seem to last me a good while.
