Guys, ethics is just that. Everyone has their own set. In reality all of, "God's creatures" are just as alive as the next and none are (in a vacuum) more valuable than others. Different circumstances may give some animals a greater value to some individuals (trophy animal, game animal, endangered animal) but as long as you're following the law, you're entitled to your own ethical choices. However even if they are true, statements on a public forum encouraging shots designed to increase an animals suffering should be avoided lest the antis use them against us. Well said! No reason to encourage an animal suffering. Just because the state has declared them a non game nuisance animal does not mean its right to make them suffer. Doing that just really shows the caliber of person someone really is and adds to the fuel on the fire we hunters face today politically.

Doing that just really shows the caliber of person someone really is... There you go - judging ethics. I don't think we've ever had a subject on ethics that didn't get sideways and then hit the ditch.

When it comes to hogs my ethics fly out the window. I will shoot as many as I possibly can and leave every one. All you guys preaching about edible meat are a little hypocritical aren't you? All meat is edible. Do you eat the mice you kill or the roaches and other insects you kill. Pigs are vermin and I treat them as such.

[quote]Here is an idea! To me it sounds like hogs are more of a convenience to you than the nuisance you claim since you state that you sell hunts as part of your livelihood. Without these hogs I would think your livelihood would suffer. But since they are such a nuisance to you why don't you open up your ranch and allow responsible hunters to come help you eradicate your place free of charge You can have a hunter check in and registration prior to their arrival so you will know who they are and who is on your land.
I'd be willing to bet (just a guess...no hard facts) that you would more than double or even triple the numbers of hunters helping you reduce your hog numbers.[quote]
Hogs are definitely not a convenience for our ranch. To put it bluntly, it's more of an ongoing battle. Heres what you get into when you start hunting hogs on a upscale frequency. When you shoot into them during the day they learn real quick to feed at night and consequently turn nocturnal. Now you're hunting day and night and no one set of guides want to hunt the odd hours. Theres not enough man power to run a respectable hog hunting agenda. Now, this is just my opinion but I've booked guys for hog hunts and the revenue created from a hog hunt isn't worth scratch.
We are far better off having the ranch flown and killing numbers instead of a few here and there during a hog hunt. The state of Texas and TP&WD are at a standstill trying to figure out any way to put a dent in the hog population as we speak.

Texas needs to legalize the use of claymores for pig control.

Some of you guys forget that Pigs/Hogs are extremely distructive to the Ag. Industry, Fences, ect..they are not a game animal but a domestic animal turned loose for profit..orig. to catch and resell at auction w/out an investment in feed and care..Only wild Hogs were some in the 30's that White Ranch imported from Russia for the hair for artists paint brushes and they got loose around Helotes due to a Tornado..Most others are crosses from Hogs that escaped or were turned out on Timber Prop that was leased ect. and we won't run out..shoot the heck out of them..I saw dead at least 8 on the side of Hwy 173 between Bandera and Hondo Saturday..DD

Folks used to run hogs & cattle all down the Neches...some of those folks are still living and can tell you they didn't think things all the way through on the hogs.

This. I shot 42 the last year I hunted Mason Co and left everyone laying. I figured I saved a few dear along to way feeding the Yotes not so much with leavin'em lay, but "shootin'em in the guts" will get me angered. In cases where the hog population is abundant the old gut shot is the best! Why? Hogs will eat other hogs especially if they are wounded and bleeding. Todays feral hogs could possibly be diseased and dangerous for human consumption. We usually have our ranch flown with helicopter for hogs coyotes and cats.
I'd ask him if he's pregnant. He missed a s__tload of periods. I'll take "things that look like a uterus" for $200 Alex.

Boy some of you wouldn't like to see our dump site on our lease, theres quite a few WHOLE hogs rotting there. I am down with the gut shot and let them die somewhere else theory, then I don't have to move them from the area of the feeders!
My best analogy is pigs are to ranchers what black bears are to gold miners in Alaska. The damn things destroy everything, door frames to cabins, windows, they eat the seats off 4 wheelers and heavy equipment, chew through oil and hydraulic lines there just no use for em in a working mine. I know guys that killed 20-30 a year and many were gut shot to run off an die. Try telling a gold miner who hasn't stopped fixing chit all summer long from bear damage when he should be mining to make money, that a black bear is a game animal!!!

I hate hogs, and I think all of them should die and wish they would. They serve no purpose in the habitat we have hear in Texas or throughout the South for that matter. They destroy crops and the farmers way of living and they destroy the habitat for the native species we really love to hunt! I have no issue with shooting them and letting them lay, but on the same note, they shouldn't suffer. Shoot them and kill them with a clean shot and let mother nature work her magic with the carcass. Like someone said earlier, you may save a trohpy buck by shooting a hog for coyotes to eat...Just my $0.02

Boars = buzzard bait. Sows are skinned, quartered and put in the freezer.

I am not one for wanton waste, but our place is overrun. Small hogs, 75 and under we will take for food. The bigger ones we leave. The cycle of nature will take care of the rest. If somebody wants the kill, they are welcome to come out and retrieve the animal.

As opposed to making a good kill shot and eating or dragging them off? Dumbest post ive read in a while. I would feel bad if I thought I was wrong, but when I have to repair the damage they cause I don't care where or how they die as long as they DIE. I will try to make the killing shot, but ifen theys a runnen I'm a sprayen!!!

I will grab a strap or two when i feel like cooking or give them to someone if they want the meat but im not going through the trouble to skin out a pig just to put in the freezer and ruin when i could just get some fresh straps off the next one.... id say i put a blade to 1 outa every dozen....maybe...the rest get piled up and then i shoot yotes. Im not into wasting GAME....and i like eating wild hog too... hogs are a problem plain and simple...maybe yall should start eating all the yotes yall kill too....and bobcats....and coons... thats just wrong to let them lay too right?
