Guys,
I need some input and experience. My wife wants to get me a timber hunt this upcoming season for my 30th birthday. I have looked at lots of websites from guides all around the Stuttgart area and I notice that there is a large price difference in the outfitters with seemingly similar accomodations and services. Who should I use? Please post some of your experiences with some of the guides and prices if you remember them.
Thanks,

Make sure you find a guy with private land vs. public. Timber hunting is awesome, you're going to love it. I've got a guy I use but he's semi retired and doesn't really solicit new business anymore. If you get in a bind finding someone, let me know, but I'm sure you'll get some good suggustions.

I would have to agree. Went to Stuttgart area for the second split opener. We didn't hunt timber, but flooded soybean fields. It was warm, no new birds, geese everywhere. I would definitely go again in a heartbeat, but get after them later in the season.
 No bad days hunting

Sounds like it would be an awesome place to take someone next year that hasn't hunted timber before....hint hint...

Thanks Gumbeaux. I'll keep that in mind.
I would like to go in the second split like some of you guys are talking about after the birds are plumed out a little better. I would like to get something to bring home for the wall.

We didn't hunt timber, but flooded soybean fields. It was warm, no new birds, geese everywhere. That's because birds were in the woods! This was opening of the second in Arkansas.

I looked at Slick's. That was one of my first stops on the internet. They are on the high end of the price range. Do you get any better bang for the buck there or are there others as good but with less cost? I would like to get as many hunts in as I can.

Make sure and call and discuss the hunt with the outfitter now. Slick's is great and you get what you pay for. There are others but prime timber is pricy to hunt anywhere.
A lot of the cheaper outfits will be field hunting.
If you want a mix, think about doing 2 days at one of the cheaper field outfits and then another few days at a timber spot that will likely be more $$.
I say call because most of the guys with fields do have some Timber but it's usually not very productive. They'll give you the rundown of we'll hunt where the birds are but yes we offer Timber hunts.

What can we do? I'm saving my money now, just let me know when...

We used to run all of our corperate hunts through Slicks (1-2 year for 8 years). The one and only thing i didnt like was the community bunks. That might have changed been 5 years since our last trip. You get what you pay for.
