Dont know if I'll keep the topper. I have it forsale on craigslist, so we'll see. Its a 2009 Tacoma 4x4 4cyl 5spd w/31k miles. Did 450miles with it yesterday through central wyoming. Got decent mpg's out of her, considering most of my roadtrip was dirt roads and hills/mountains. Hope to take plenty of bird hunting trips this fall in it!

I have been very pleased with it. Cant decide whether or not to keep the topper (truck came with it). It sucks trying to crawl to the back to get gear out.
Better tires are in order, bfg long trail's suck big time. I'm def. going to add some fogs up front.

That topper will come in handy in the rain and snow keeping all your gear in good (and dry) shape.

Tie a cord to your gear, slide it forward, add more gear with cords. When you need it out pull cord. Worked great on a full size long bed truck.

I think Im going to sell the topper I have and get an aluminum A.R.E. Commercial style cap. So I can make a couple of dog kennels for the hounds. Instead of just running a two hole dog box.

Took the topper off, added a two hold owens dog box, and some 235/85/16 Cooper AT3 tires. A rack and roof top tent will be next.

I like them little trucks great little trucks. awesome runabouts that won't leave you in the woods or on the side of a mountain. What kind of mileage are you getting in the 4cyl?
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

With the taller 235/85's probably around 20-22mpg's.
With the 4cyl it really depends on the weather and terrain. I mean if its one or the other no problem, but going up a 6% grade with a 50mph headwind the little 2.7L has to give it everything it has.
Going over the Bighorns I had to down shift to 3rd gear. I would love a 4cyl diesel..
But one huge plus to this pickup is its light, and compact. Its like a mountain goat.

Yes, Toyota have the Hilux with Diesel engines for year but only in Asian. They sold some of Hilux diesel back in the 80.

Actually, you can get them nearly world wide, except in North America..In fact here in the UK, the majority of our 4x4's are diesel, and of those, the Hilux is one of the most highly rated..
