that is very very sad and happens too often, one of my wife's cousins died while cleaning a gun when he was young. Prayers for the parents, family and friends and especially the other young person who was there.

Why do people keep a loaded gun in their house with children around? I keep my guns in one area of the house but the ammo is in another room locked up. I have the only key and its on my possession every minute of the day.
I feel for you and your family about the accidental death while cleaning, thats seems to happen quite a bit.

By the way, I am looking for one just for the sake of theives.
I would like to add something here. When i was a kid we did not have safes or hiding places for our guns, they were on the wall in a gun rack. We new what they were and what their purpose was and we respected that....

BH, I have only one loaded gun in the house. It is my conciled carry weapon. My son knows that it is loaded and he knows it is not his place to handle it. But it was my responsibility to aproach the subject with him and educate him on handling them.
I too grew up around guns and at a very early age was taught to repsect them. My fathers office had about 90 different revolvers and pistols. It just seems that parents now just do not take the time to explain the proper respect for fireams. I guess its lesson only learned thru suffering for some.
I wish the family well and know that the other boy will never forget it! Prayers!!!!!!!!!

Because an unloaded firearm is useless for defending your home. I have a loaded firearm within ten feet of me anywhere in the house. What killed that boy was his parents failing to teach him about firearms.
Our fathers and grandfathers grew up with firearms stored in unlocked, glass-fronted gun cabinets. Firearms were displayed in the living room. Maybe dad's dad kept one in the closet or under the bed, but you can bet your [censored] there was probably a loaded weapon in the house.
Guns haven't gotten more dangrerous - people have gotten less responsible... and far less intelligent.
If brilliant men are roses then I'm just a field of daisies.

I keep telling my daughter not to eat the playdough or stop leaving her crayons on the floor, do you think she listens? Dare I spank her or the FBI, NSA, CIA, and others from the alphabet soup show up at my door. The times have changed and by god I would rather have someone steal my tv than for my kid to kill themselves with my own handgun. I couldnt live with that..

I will whoop one of my daughters' asses without a moment's hesitation. NO ONE is going to tell me how to discipline my children, and as a result, I haven't had to administer a spanking in probably five years.
As for having your television stolen, that's the least of your worries. You want to talk about times changing? People don't just politely wait for you to leave and burglarize your home now. They crash through your front door, armed and with intent to kill. I'll be damned to the blackest pit of hell if I stand there like a deer in the head lights when my family's safety is on the line.
Kids can understand the power of a firearm and they can be taught the utmost respect for them from a very early age. This business about kids playing with guns is a fairly recent phenomenon and it stems directly from parental irresponsibility.
Anyone who wants to compromise their ability to defend themselves, their family and their property, go ahead and do so. But do not deign to condescend those who place a premium on their ability to levy a defense and have the forethought to teach, teach, teach their children about firearms the way their fathers and their fathers' fathers did for decades immemorial.

Saw a show on TV a several years ago, maybe some of you guys saw it, it was like a Dateline show or something like that, but it was about kids and guns. They interviewed selected parents that brought their kids up with guns, and in the interview, all these parents bragged and when on and on about how their kids would never touch a gun if they found one.
So then they put all these kids in a setting in a house with a gun on the coffee table in the4 corner of this room, there were about 6 to 10 kids like 8 to 10 yrs old or something. When the kids found the gun, at first they did not touch it and saying and doing the things their parent taught them, but before long, one pick up the gun, and before long, they were all playing with the gun and one kid even pointed at another if my memory serves me right. And the parents were shocked as they watched, and really could not believe their kids would have done that.
I have had several talks with my kids about this, if I ever found out they were handling my guns without me there, and worse yet, showing their buddies my guns, well I will not post what I said I would do to them, but hope my kids get the message, but I keep my guns locked up anyway, purly from that show. I also told my kinds that if any of there buddies ever show them a gun, especially their parents gun, to let me know, and I will be having a talk with that parent. My son is a good boy, and he came clean and told me of a friend that showed him a pellet gun lol. I been tempted to talk to the parent about that, but my son has a pellet gun, and I keep that locked up as well. Just not worth the risk with kids, jmo.

Dad keep all his guns in a safe while we where growing up, all except his colt 1911 ( bedside table) and a 22 rifle. The 22 was for us, if we wanted to shot the shotguns or deer rifles dad had to get them out if we asked. Now you got to know my pop's and ask me if I ever touched that 1911 or got the key to the gun safe....... NOPE. I was afraid of my dad and the hell I would catch if I went against his house rules. That was one rule we never broke growing up. Kids are different today. They did not grow up like must of us. So with that said, I think it's best to keep the guns locked up when your not around.

+1 Guy...
There are other ways to help protect your home, have your windows replaced with bullet proof glass, replace your doors with harden steel doors, install dead bolts with four inch throws instead of the one inch, replace door jams with steel, and even if you can't afford the better alarm systems opt for the cheaper ones. I can get to anyone of my guns before anyone gets into my house, unless they are driving trash truck.

Big problem with kids is peer pressure. If a friend who has not been exposed to the danger of guns comes over and asks about a gun your kid might feel the pressure to "show off" to his friend.
That's why a lot of these stories have two kids in the room at the time of the accident.
I keep my guns and ammo in a locked room. I'll get a safe in the next year or two.

My doors look like the ones you get from Lowes or Home Depot(even has glass), my windows are not bared and the glass is as clear as yours. My house does not look any different than any of yours. I have cable, flat screen tv, computer, and screened doors but it would take a tank to get in....

Under Texas law you are allowed to whoop your kids, and even if it wasn't I would still whoop my kids. I have rounds in almost every gun in my house, and my kids get tested regularly. I have a taurus with a lock built in, and I will place it in the living room unloaded and locked. I will go outside for a few hours and come back. The gun has never been moved. My kids were introduced to guns since they were old enough to understand and get into them. BTW all my kids friends hunt and have there own guns. You can't protect you kids from everything, you just can educate them and hope they make the right decisions in life, not just with guns.

Another hint in the quality of these parents, the mother didn't even go to the hospital. She told the police that the father was at the hospitial with the injured child. I think I see the problem in this incident.

It may be legal but let me explain something to all of you that admit to whooping your child and this is from experience with CPA. It only takes a phone call to get investigated by CPA, youve seen on tv with the church in San Angelo. Thats all it takes, a disgruntle employee, neighbor, or shopping center with video cameras can make that call. Then you have to prove that no harm is been done to the child.

Only if they call and get the parents permission can they whoop your kid.

As AMERICANS we need to take back our rights, and freedoms. STOP abiding by rules that are pushed on you, over riding LAW, and our RIGHTS. This stops with yourself, stop hidding from them and meet them at your door head on, and yes I HAVE DELT WITH CPS AND YES THEY DID LEAVE, sign nothing agree to nothing and talk to your attorney the minute this arises, they will crawl back under thier rocks! YOU HAVE THE POWER NOT CPS.
