I live in Lubbock and I will 2nd JJ's hunt water comment. We use full bodies (4 dz) and a few silos to add volume when needed. With the recent rains, and if they continue there should be plenty of playas unlike last year. I say silos and some floaters and start knocking on farm houses.
Oh and I have a wetland pattern, but add whatever cover I am hunting in to my layout each trip.

did you use a layout blind, if so what color?
Probably the funniest question yet (hence the answer)
I laid on the ground (bare ground) next to the goose shells.
or I dug a hole and sat in it...
Layout blinds didn't exsist...and if I had come up with the idea...you could call me Mr. Avery!

When you find a playa that is good...and that they are coming into...and you have 5000 mallards come in...You tell me...
Or find a field that those 5000 mallards are feeding in and sit in it...you tell me...
Point is...you can kill birds in 3 places, where they Eat, loaf or roost...
You pick...
If you pick the roost, the birds will move on...

well Mr. avery without ever field huning I would think field hunting would be more fun. I have hunted water plenty of times but it was deep and needed more equiptment than I had. It seems to me setting up in a field would be easier and more fun.

You know I get shot down about 2 out of 3 times. I am a banker so I have some good contacts, and that helps, but the birds are always moving so a lot of the time we knock on doors. By the way I prefer field hunting myself, but because most of the geese around Lubbock are roosting in town when you find a playa they are hanging out on during the day, the mid morning hunts are fantastic.

Yeah we kill some cranes every year. I hunt mostly within a few minutes of Lubbock and the cranes are hit or miss. I grew up in Levelland, and we had tons of cranes and few geese. I donate my cranes, geese, and ducks to a gentlemen whose family really enjoys them. I have heard lots of people comment on how good crane is, but it is not my favorite.

O We stayed in a hotel in levelland in april and I have to say the onlythin i saw was a railroad and a hotel, but i like the area. I have seen alot more circular irrigation methods east of I-27 is it better there?

If you want to try and field hunt...go for it..
Field hunting is awesome for the mere fact that you typically aren't dealing with mud...(or water)
But the odds are better hunting water...
You end up on the wrong field...= 0 birds
If you want my opinion...I would stick with water...
Playa's are 1"-3' deep... Deep water in most of them isn't a problem...
Mark = Lobo????
Spent a year at South plains...

I just dont want to screw up the roost that way i can always scout them, but i realize that if i dont go for the roost someone will. I like watching goosing hunting in a field more than i do over water so thats why i knik i would like it. I am sure playa hunting is spectacular, but i plan on doing my fare share of scouting and more to find the exact field where the geese are. I guess its just differsnt for everybody.

It is not a whole lot different East of I-27, at least until you get off the cap. They key to field hunting in this part of the world is peanuts. This year there are lots of peanut and milo fields, but if you can get permission on a peanut field close to town you should have the opportunity at a good field hunt. The peanut fields get leased really quick so now is the time to start scouting and knocking on doors.
JJ - I am a Lobo or was years ago. What year were you at SPC? Looks like the stripers are still going crazy on Texoma. A buddy of mine, Jay Gaines, is from Pottsboro and we make 2 or 3 Texoma trips a year, that lake is incredible.

JJ: I sent you a PM but your box is full.
Duckhunter4life:
What you have to do is find geese. A peanut field is no good unless the geese are using it. So what I do is try and have serveral fields that might hold geese during the season and then follow the birds and hope they are feeding where I can hunt.

I've hunted fields many times and only used a layout blind on a few guided hunts. I will just camo up and sometimes bring some camo netting that I put over my feet and body like a blinket. Layout blinds are great for comfort more than anything. I really want one but just havent gotten around to getting one.
Dear Lord please bullwhip me for saying this but I agree, Marcstar is in the lead. Please nobody use this as a quote!!!

This was from Tonight!
Buddy with 2 of the 4 overs we had...the smaller 19" fish were in the cooler!

this is from a sticky in the photos topic (1) Go to www.photobucket.com(2) Setup an account - it's free (3) Read their directions on pic size and types (4) Locate and identify the pics you have already saved to your hard drive, disc, or camera. (I have found that saving pics to my hard drive is quicker.) (5) From Photobucket, in the file name field, where it reads "Choose an image (or a video)", click on Browse. This is where you will need to go to your pic folder. (6) Double-Click on the pic you want. (7) On your Photobucket page, click on Upload. This will transfer the pic from your computer to the Photobucket webpage. (8) Scroll down to where you will locate your newly uploaded pic. (9) Beneath that pic you will see three different fields, *URL, *HTML, and *IMG (10) In the IMG field, highlight the entire script, right click your highlight and in the popup click on Copy. (11) Go to your post in the Texas Hunting Forum (or any other site) and in the body of your post, click your right mouse button and then click on Paste. (12) It's there. It's always a good thing to review your reply to make sure, though.
