What's everyone's thoughts on a .22 for coyote hunting. My dad has done it for years but wanted other opinions. Most of my hunting would not be over 50-75 yards....mostly calling in at night. I currently have a Ruger 10/22 and shoot CCI Stingers. Thanks!

While the 22 LR may be the greatest Whitetail cartridge of all time its just a little under powered for coyotes. I've killed yotes with it but mostly ones I had traped either in legholds or snares. I've killed them with a 22 when they weren't in traps. It will work if your shots are under 75 yards but you just don't have much margin for error on your shots and a more powerful round is more forgiving with shot placement. If you can eye punch everyone you won't have a problem with it, but if you can't a bigger gun my be a better choice. I've always thought a coyote could take more lead than a deer could anyday. All of this is JMO but its worth what you paid for it, its free.

USE A BIGGER GUN IF YOU HAVE ONE...IF YPU DON'T JUST GO AHEAD AND USE THE 22 , IF YOU ENJOY COYOTE HUNTING ENOUGH YOU'LL END UP BUYING A BIGGER GUN!

BIGGER GUN I've seen it done with a 22 but they tend to run a lonngggg way after. Unless you can head shoot them give them the respect they deserve as a predator and get a bigger gun. JMO I agree with bayourat a yote will take a ton bigger gun than a deer. I've hit them solid with a 223 and had them run off.

Years ago, I killed a coyote with a .22 LR Single Six at about 50 yards. The first shot stopped him but it took a second shot to kill him.
If you have something bigger, use it, but if you keep shots less than 50 yards and place them correctly, the .22 LR will kill coyotes.

Shoot A bigger gun and shoot in the shoulder..... Not behind but in the sholder. They will not go far. If you use a .22lr. right between the eyes.

head shot, i use my .22 mag all the time. But I am in the market for either a .22-250 or .243 right now, using it for deer and yotes. I like to daytime hunt and take some longer shots. i dont even trust myself to take some of those shots with my .22 mag.

A 22 rimfire will kill a coyote without any problems. Personally I would choose to use a 22-250, but the rimfire will work. I would recommend not using the stinger round. Keep in mind that the stinger round is a hollow point round moving a little quicker than your average 22 rimfire. That bullet will not have the penetration that a slower non-hollow point bullet will. With a 22 rimfire you either want a head shot or behind the shoulder. Don't shoot them in the shoulder you could have a penetration problem due to the light weight bullet at a slow velocity.

CCI makes the velocitor, which is a 40 grain hollow point moving at what they say is over 1400 fps. I got a couple boxes at carters country last year but never got the chance to try them on a coyote. The stinger is only 32 grains, so the extra weight of the velocitor will help with downrange penetration.

From my experience hunting yotes for a few of the ranchers up here in Colorado, a 22LR will kill one of them if you keep your shots within 50 yrds and can place them well. That said, if give the choice of using a larger caliber, I would definitely recommend you use something more substantial. In my younger years, I had alot of 'yotes run off to die what I figure was a long painful death after hitting them with a 22LR. Once I got to where I could afford to get myself a bigger gun, I havent' had that problem, even once.

If you have to use the .22 take careful aim at the head squeeze the trigger and Pow, after the first shot spray the rest of the rounds in your clip in the general direction you think the yote will run in case you missed the first shot.

If you use a round that contains more grain, you can put em down with a double-deuce. I think you should knock off a .17HMR. That will keep some loot in your pocket and the yotes from around your area. But if you have looot to burn, gone get yourself something in the .223 caliber.
