are you guys shooting in "M" mode or one of the auto settings? I'm thinking about taking the canon out tomorrow for some practice but with this expected heavy fog it may not happen.

I haven't taken my canon out yet, so I'm not sure. I'd like to know to

I usually shoot in A - aperture mode. This will give you the depth of field you need and let the shutter speed adjust to meet that aperture. Anything under f8 will blur the background and make the subject pop. Works well if you are shooting down on ducks on the water. If you want to freeze motion, use S - Shutter mode and set as high a number as you need to freeze wings or wahtever.

I only ever shoot M with studio lights. Too much to manage when having to set aperture and speed when you cannot tell the subject to hold still.

Canon should have a good P - Program mode which should favor higher shutter speeds (I shoot Nikon, so YMMV). Also play with different metering modes - centerpoint, matrix, etc.

Fog is an awesome photo helper. Look for shots where you can get close to the subject - the background gets all dreamy and junk....

It will be pretty tough in manual mode for action shots. If you are takng a scene shot and you have a tripod then Manual would be what I choose. That way I dictate the light, not the light dictating me. At work I use only manual but hey, if the subjects I am photographing are moving then something is way out of whack.

While hunting, the lighting conditions are constantly changing and I shoot a lot in low light. So I typically only want to think about my aperture setting, so I leave it in AV (aperture priority) mode. Manual mode is more for controlled situations, ie. studio work, etc. As Borane mentioned, play with the metering. You can get everything from overly blown out skies to cool silhouettes shots.

Thanks, didnt take the camera with me. I figured the fog was going to stay thick throughout the hunt.

I only shoot in "M" with mine, but I'm not a professional either. I take mine when I boat into spots that have "dry ground" to blind into.

Other than that it only gets used at the boat ramp or at the house.
