Has anyone on here ever planted peanuts for a food plot? I have a place that has real sandy soil.

Used to hunt around Proctor and the deer and hogs would destroy a peanut field

I haven't but know that the deer up around the peanut fields of De Leon have been really nice. If you can grow them, it should help the deer.

Deer swarmed the panut feilds here in May. It's a great idea, in fact I know a guy who used peanuts for bait along with his corn, worked great.

Just takes a few comments to convince me. It was either that or soybeans. Besides, I may try to roast a few.

Not to threadjack, but my brother just got a place in the middle of 10k acres and has peanuts all around him. He put up a feeder and has some activity but sees more deer driving to and from his house then he does at his feeder. What should he do to entice the deer specifically to his area when there are damn peanuts all over the place for them to eat?

Water, or he doesn't even need a stand. Just lay and wait then put the spot and stalk on when he sees one worth taking. Maybe a giant mineral sight.

I would say if you have hogs that they will root up the freshly planted peanuts. I have friend who bought a truck load of low grade shelled peanuts. He put them in his spin feeders when he hunted in Llano. All the other hunters used only corn. That year the ranch had a ton of acorns and he was the only hunter seeing any deer at his feeder. He said he had more deer than normal on the peanuts and it was the only time he seen deer leave acorns or walk over them when his feeder went off. Said they stood around waiting on it to go off.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

peanuts are great, but much harder to grow than blackeye pea, okra or grain sorghum.

I'm going to give it a shot this year and see what happens. I have only seen 1 hog in 15 years at this place so, I don't think I will have a problem with them.

where are you getting them?
If I send my neighbors a text and ask them to give me feedback on my lawn and plant rye into a giant dong pattern, I'm probably going to get some less than positive feedback. Same goes here.

We put out 4 big round bales of peanut hay 3 weeks ago and the deer are really eating it. They waste some of the hay digging through it to get to the peanuts, but they are eating it and peanuts/peanut hay is not a product of the area. We wanted to know if the deer would eat it, so we hauled in 4 bales and put them out in random spots and the deer are getting after them.

Indian corn. if that stuff won't work, nothing will! Not to threadjack, but my brother just got a place in the middle of 10k acres and has peanuts all around him. I'd ask him if he's pregnant. He missed a s__tload of periods. I'll take "things that look like a uterus" for $200 Alex.
