I've not hunted deer in many years(27), since I was a kid. Anyhow my son and I just got a small lease and we wanted to put a feeder in. I'm not looking for something too expensive, but nothing that will need replacing next season. I understand there is an amount of maintenance to put in, but also looking for quality in the product. So an affordable, good quality feeder. What do y'all think ? Are these Moultire feeders any good ?

I have the 99 dollar remington for academy, and they have been out for 2 years with zero problems. They are no where near the best, but I have had good luck so far. that looks almost the same as the ones I have. Well mine is alot taller than that.

It is frequented by groups of hogs I counted 37 in one group, and it has never been knocked over. Except one time when I was filling it using my front end loader on my tractor and got a little to close. It didn't hurt anything thoughht.

The guy I hunt with swears by the short feeders. So far, nothing has knocked his over. I prefer mine to be a little taller. Helo, I've got this picture in my head of you trying to load your feeder with the bucket...

Here you go, the dang game cams don't miss any of my screw ups. And this was after I just filled it up. Had to go get more corn.

I hear good things about the Remingtons mentioned here, spending lots of money does not guarantee a reliable feeder.

I have 5 of the Remington digital timer feeders mounted on 55 gallon barrels and they work great. I have been using them for several years now with 0 problems. I would definitely recommend putting a solar panel on your feeder though.

Yeah, I didn't even think about it until I checked the camera the next day.

You can bet that I make sure the tractor is in reverse when I am done filling the feeder now.

I agree regarding the solar panels, but recommend mounting the panels directly to the timer housing, thus avoiding any exposed wiring leading to other problems like squirrels or coons destroying the integrity of the wiring harness, and adding a varmint guard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgJ4HoXgsR0

Try Spin Cast or Sweeney. (Both are great products)

Thanks on you opinions. One more question. How far from the bottom of the container cone should the metal spreader piece be set at ?

Depends how much corn you want it to throw. I think they recomend 1/2 inch, but you have to play with it to get it like you want.

+1 , each set up may be a little different and the gap is different from motor to motor.

I had a friend mention the thickness of your finger??? Don't know for sure. Be careful, as to much of a gap and the wind will drain your feeder very quickly$$$$$

Solar panel is a must and if I can recommend one other thing, try to go with a 12v feeder, harder throw = more distance and also a longer run time. As far as motor's, I built my own barrel and legs, well a friend did it for me and I put the Cabelas green box on it. Seems to be ok for now, its been up since April. Just remember the more you spend doesnt mean the more deer, well you might get a deer with Paris Hilton's taste for expensive things, pretty much any feeder will work for a long time without any issues unless you get a bad one. I like Cabelas return policy the most and its closer to where I live.
Oh and I use the end of my finger as a guide, but that depends on the thickness of your fingers, usually a half inch is good and you dont get any corn blowing off of the spinner plate.

I know alot of people will disagree, but I have switched from On time feeders to the cheap ($30-40) american hunter models at walmart. They are easy to operate and this is the third year on them. Now I only use them from mid August to end of season, not year round. Battery life is great, and if something goes wrong with them, you have 90 days to take back to walmart, and if its past that, throw them away. right now my feeder has cost me $10 a year. How many others can say that? i do live close to my lease and can easily get out at least once a week.

That's awesome you have figured it out, stick to it. Unfortunately I was once jinxed with all kind of feeder problems, and I bought all the brands(cheap to higher end) trying to find the fail safe model, which to this day I don't think exist. It sounds like we both realize there are gonna be problems with feeders if you use them.
