I'm about to purchase an AR-15 for hogging out on my property.

to all my fellow pork snipers and AR vets which barrel is best for knocking off hogs? the 1/9 or the 1/7?

I would go with the 1:7" especially if you handload. You can feed it 75 grainers and heavier. They'll have less muzzle velocity that the 55's but carry more energy, and carry it farther.

I like the 1:9. It says that the most you can stabilize is up to about 69/70 gr but I've got some decent groups with my 20" 1:9 shooting 75s. Didn't measure it but it was close to an inch with 5 shot groups. Give or take 1/4".

1:7 - 1:8 if you're running an AR 15 - stabilizes the heavier bullets >70gr

1:11.25 if you're running an AR 10 - much more preferable. I run an AR10 with 168gr and the benefit of this is that my second (or third) shot (usually not well-placed) is often deadly.

Ryan81, Thanks for the info on twist rate. I have an AR15 with 1:9 twist and was wondering about heavier bullets.

Note that the twist rates and bullet weights are pretty good estimates, but at the extreme ends of the bullet weight ranges for a given estimate, you may find some loads don't work work, where groups that would normally be 1" are now 3" or more and it may come down to weight and load. So while a 1:9 may stabilize 70 grain bullets, it may not stabilize all of them equally well.

Since I don't plan on shooting lighter bullets, I too like the 1:8 and and 1:7 twist rates. Heavier bullets tend to be better than lighter bullets when hunting hogs from a small caliber like 5.56/.223...or just shoot them in the brain.

Or get you a 6.8. Much better round for hunting deer and hog....and they even have the v-max fer varmints

My 1/9 didn't like the 75gr bullets much and shot 4 to 5 MOA with them.
It would shoot 55gr bullets into 2 to 2.5 MOA but it was a pencil barrel.
My 1/8 medium profile barrel would shoot the same 75gr bullets under 1/2 MOA.
We have an ARP 16" 1/8 barrel that shoots insanely accurate with everything we have fed it so far.

If you handload, try some 70gr Barnes TSX - the TSX doesn't have the plastic tip and you can load them slightly longer. They are one of the best I have tried in .223 on pigs before I moved on to 6.8x43.

I've had good results with 75gr Hornady BTHP from both 1/9 and 1/8 .223 barrels. The 1/8 was far more accurate, and would allow the use of 70 gr Barnes TSX or 75 gr Swifts.

For hunting with .223, I shoot hogs in the ear, so just about any accurate .223 bullet will work. For deer I shoot them high in the shoulder with 75gr Hornady, or in the neck with just about any HP or SP.

Most of your TOP AR's for accuracy use a 1/8 Wylde. My latest edition is shooting 55's very well. I can't wait to try some 75's in a qaulity ammo line.
