I have an old pos mossberg 20ga that I have been kicking around the idea of building a slug gun. Then realized I have zero use for one. I'm thinking ill cut the barrell down and keep it by the bed for home protection. And was wondering what the shortest I can legally go. And where to measure from? The receiver or where? Thanks.

Shortest you can go on a shotgun barrel is 18" without getting a tax stamp from the ATF.

Barrel has to be at least 18 or 18.5 (do not remember which) inches for a shotgun, measured from the muzzle to the receiver end of the barrel where the case rim is. The one I have cut down I did to 20 inches so there was no doubt.

There is a min over all legnth to consider as well.

Barrel must be no shorter than 18" measured from the breach face with the action in full battery. Meaning you would stick a dowel down the barrel, resting it on the bolt face (of a pump gun) and measure 18". Also it must have an overall length of 26"

^^^^^^THIS^^^^^^^

The ATF uses a dowel to measure just like stated above. DONT go shorter than 18.5. Their dowel may measure a little different than yours.

I wouldn't want to do ten years in the federal pen over 1/2 inch.

I believe I have a Willimas receiver sight designed for a POS Mossberg bolt shotgun, course you would still need a front sight.
