I use my 7mm-08 for 90% of my big game hunting, especially here in Texas. You buddies are not too savvy.

I hunt the hill country about 30 miles NE of Llano. At our camp almost everyone shoots .243 and anyone shooting anything bigger is constently teased bout being over-gunned. I started shoting 7mm-08 about 10 Yrs ago in Arkansas, have killed a lot of deer with it along with one black bear and since moving to texas 6 yrs ago quite a few hogs as well. In my opinion, its the ideal deer caliber and I don't feel at all "over" or "under" gunned.
Now it would be hard to believe that everyone if Texas shoots .243 for deer but listning to the guys at our camp would sure give you that impression! I guess it would depend on what part of Texas your hunting, but what calibers ARE used the most here?

Man, don't listen to those recoil sensitive hunters. You use whatever caliber you want; this is United States of America! I hunt deer with a .308, .270 or my 7 mag.

7-08 is perfect. I hunted with one for years. Personally I like being told I am overgunned, when I am not bow hunting I switched to a 35 Whelen and am working up loads for my 300 RUM.

Your in german country. ... I now a guy that owns a big ranch down there and he and all his kids use 222... hundreds of deer have fallen to those rifles. . But I think 7-08 is a great caliber second only to the 25-06/257wby I agree with bobo. Your in Germain aim small miss small sausage making country. The place we used to lease all the family hunted with 22 hornet or 222 rem. When they got out the BIG GUN they reached for a 223 or 22250, and if any Tanks needed shooting they had a 243 hiddent away. We shot 270's and 280's they thought we were crazy. I shot my first deer with my 300 wby there... you should have seen the looks on their faces! Just oposite, we day hunted a place in Pipe creek where the owner said nothing 243 and down would kill deer... you should have seen the look on his face when my sister in law dropped a nice doe in its tracks with one body shot from a 223.

as far as modern cartridges go, I think the 7-08 is the ultimate Texas deer cartridge. But it is far inferior to my 7x57 hehe. capt david

I think for our Texas deer that the 7-08 and 25-06 are just about perfect.

Anything over .22 centerfire..............LOL jk im not gonna do that In GA they say 243 is just right. In Texas, you'll have people shooting ARs and some shooting ultra mags. But 7mm-08 is a good caliber.

I have personally taken deer with 30-30, 30-06 and 45-70. I have seen deer taken with 243, 270, 303 British and 20 gauge slug. None of those deer were overly or underly dead.

Would a .260 still be too much gun?
After all a .243" is 6mm, a .264" is 6.5mm, and a 7mm is .284"
At what measurement, of bullet diameter, is not "too much gun"? Where is the cut-off point? They need some enlightenment.

I think the amount of powder behind said bullet would mean more than the size of the bullet size itself. .257 wby sure packs a punch.

Right, of the ones I mentioned, they all fit in a .308 bolt face short action. And their powder charge variance ain't that much between the lot of em.

Over the years have taken deer cleanly with 34 different cartridge selections, including the 243. No deer was any deader taken with any choice than any of the choice though some are better choices for the task than others for versatility reasons.
A good friend that is also a commercial deer processor said he can usually get a good idea of the cartridge selection used by the amount of damage done to the meat. #1 for tearing up lots of meat in his opine the 243 with standard cup and core bullets.

Your individual bunch may well be 243 hunters/fans, but there is a lot of Texas that hunts our favorite 4 legged beasty w/everything from a 223 to a 416 Mag..Personally I used to cull shoot about 35 to 40 animals a yr. and used primarily a 22-250 except for long shots and I used my 300 Wtrby if we just had to have a particular animal. I hunt w/a 308 most of the time now, and use either 130 gr or 150 grain TSX or TTSX Barnes..It's just a matter of preference..My old Uncle would never use anything but his 25=06///Don

.243 is my gun for New Mexico Mule deer. I became familular with it as a first choice of antelope hunters in Wyoming. It is also my truck gun. Now that being said, It is a very versatile caliber. .270 was also very popular. I would hardly call it a women's gun, but it is great for young hunters. I have two guns on my want list those will be 7mm-08 for my wife and .308 for me. Neither of them is too big for deer or hogs, but I would also say that either would be better.

Just to be clear... I don't feel at all over-gunned with my 7mm-08. I have started thinking about a lever 45-70 though :-)

I shoot the 30-06 in the hill country, and dont feel over gunned at all, however if you make a shoulder (bone) shot, it makes a nasty exit wound!

A lot of nasty exit wounds can be lessened by using a tougher bullet. Generally GMX, TSX, Accubond, Sirocco will not tear up as much as less tough (Cup & Core) bullets.

Dead is dead if shot placement is good. With that said, I've killed many a deer and pig with 243, but I'm currently shooting a 308 because of all my reloading stuff I have for that caliber.
