I'm looking at buying another 243 and am considering three different rifles. I'm not looking to spend a ton, but want my moneys worth. These are the three I'm considering:
1- Weatherby Vanguard Sporter
2- Howa 1500
3- Savage 10 or 11

What is you take on these? I bought my son a Savage 110 in 243 and its shoots fantastic. I personally shoot a Mauser 96 in 25-06- any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance

Can't go wrong with a Savage or a Vangaurd.

Savage.
Easy choice.
Howa and Weatherby are the same, basically...except the price...Haskell is right.

wow this is a mixed bag of replies. Ok try this- I will need to buy it in a package with the scope included(don't have the funds to buy the scope I want right now- so will have to live with what comes on it till after the first of the year). The Savage comes w/a Simmons- The Weatherby come w/Bushnell Banner- the Howa comesw/Nikko- now which would you choose?? I was told the Bushnell was the better of the three.

I think Simmons scopes have come a long way. I have a newer Simmons Master Series Prohunter and am very happy with it, much better quality than what Simmons used to make. Bushnell is a decent scope as well. Either one should be fine for a year or two until you could get something else, and probably much longer than that. If you get a Savage you might want to spend $20-$30 and get some better rings, because if your rings work loose from recoil no scope in the world is going to do you any good! The rings on the Savage Package Rifles do have that reputation, or used to anyway I don't know about the new ones. I have no experience with Nikko optics.

I believe the Simmons that comes in the package is not of the same quality as the higher end models they sell.

You may be right I'm not sure which scope comes on the Savage, Simmons does make some cheaper scopes as well and it could be one of those, but it should be good for one season at least. You might go to Savage's website and see if you can find any info on what scope it is, then just read reviews on the scope.

Good idea- think I'll do that. Now whats your thought on the accutrigger they offer??? I heard good and bad. I've never had trigger work done on any rifle, I just use what it has and do just fine, but the thought of being able to lighten the pull myself sounds interesting

Everybody seems to love the accutrigger. I have shot one and I liked it, it's not hard to get used to or anything like that. I have never tried to adjust one, but everybody I have talked to says it's easy to adjust. My friend's rifle that I shot has never been adjusted, he liked it the way it came from the factory, and I thought it was fine as well. Everybody is different though and I think having a trigger you can adjust yourself is a big plus. I've got a couple rifles I wish I could adjust myself....

Accutriggers are the way.

As for Simmons, they are better since they got out of bed with Wal-Mart. (ATK take-over helped a ton). Some Savage's have come with Bushnell's as well. They generally use Simmons' though as stated. I think the biggest difference in low ends like the package scopes and the upper scopes is durability. I have a couple of TASCO"S that are fine, but I don't expect to get years and years of service with them....like I would from a Burris, Leupold, Nikon, etc. Burris has really impressed me the last few years.....I can't fault any of those three, or B&L, or Springfield/Leica's, or the upper crust Euro scopes.

I have four guns scope with telescopic sights that we keep...one tasco one springfield, one Leupf and one Burris...like them all.

Savage guns tend to out do the others mentioned here on our range...
