Everybody has heard about using corn and diesel for pigs. I was wondering if anybody had tried or knew if gas would have the same effect? I've got coons bad and hogs don't even have a chance to get to the traps before the corn is gone.

Well I take care of a property and everytime I'm there I clear trees with a chainsaw. After regular corn wouldn't work, I kept hearing soak it in diesel so I decided I would. I already keep a gas can with me for the chainsaw so ice used that twice to soak the corn. It finally hit me after checking then the second time that I was using gas not diesel. Both times the coons haven't still eaten the corn within 24 hours.
Next I'm going to make a sour mix with corn and hopefully that will work. I posted actually trying to figure out why the gas didn't work but diesel supposedly does?

Gas probably evaporated leaving very little coating on the corn.

I've heard that the diesel keeps the coons away from the corn.

Maybe hogs are diesel or electric powered on your property?

Coons can be taken care of with a mixture of golden malon fly bait and sprite. Mix up two cups of bait with 1 liter of sprite in a bowl

use alot of sour corn juice pour it on the ground or put bucket of it that coons can tip over , the hogs will still come to the smell with no corn

Keep in mind that most birds including turkeys to not have a sense of smell. So, they will eat the corn and it will very likely kill them.
Fly bait that will kill coons will kill anything else that ingests it.

I know a lot of guys use diesel on their corn but it's not for me. Just don't like the idea. Why not just hunt the coons for a while? Won't be long they'll be thinned out and I can think of worse ways to pass the time.

I agree with Splash556. What's wrong with coon hunting a few nights? You can double your fun with coons and hogs both. I'm thinking a sit in the blind with Texas Boars sendero feeder lights and a 17hmr. The smell of fresh blood usually works to attract hogs too. Of course it would pay to keep something bigger handy too in case a hog walked up. Have fun with it though!!

Fly bait that will kill coons will kill anything else that ingests it.
Yes it will that's why I put it up under a mesquite bush where only a stupid coon will go. Killed several most don't go any further than 3 feet and never had anything else try to drink it. I hate coons. Had a group of about 9 eating $20 per bag protein and never could get them to show up when I had time to shoot them. Now it's a bad week when 1 shows up on camera for the week

Alright, so I got finally got diesel a couple of weeks ago. Had the corn soaking for 7 days, set the trap and the next afternoon there was a dead doe in it. Not only did she eat a good amount of diesel soaked corn but she also basically crawled into the trap to get more.

You dont need to soak the corn in diesel. All it takes is a cup or two to 5 gallons of corn. All your trying to do is coat the corn to keep varmints, birds etc... From eating it, not kill them.

That is true about the Golden Malon but remember that anything that ears the carcas will die if they get into the paunch area. We poison pocket gophers all the time with a strichnine coated seed but stop at times when the fox start digging for the bodies. Any hawk that eats the carcass will die.

It wasn't because of the tampered corn, the trap was too small for a deer. I drain the corn very good before I put it out. I've had no dead raccoons in the area from the nasty corn.
You say you're trying to keep them from eating it, not killing them..if it were to be enough to kill an animal, then shouldn't that corn be nasty enough to keep them from eating it all together? Exactly.

While its not something I like to see I dont believe there is any crime in ACCIDENTALLY catching a deer in a hog trap/snare that dies.
