I've got the savage model 11 w/scope back. I think it's a great shooter, but the scope stinks and the rings are worse. I was able to upgrade the scope with a vortex diamondback and burris tatical rings and that thing is rock solid.

I ended up buying him the Savage model 11 with a Nikon scope. We will take it out in the next couple of weeks and see how it performs. I believe the model 11 I saw at Cabelas had the bushnell scope. Which scope did you pull off of yours Cntryislandboy?
What kind of groupings are you getting?

I bought my son the Savage/scope combo, it shoots great. I up graded the scope to a Redfiled revolution 3x9x50 and it shoots fantastic! I paid under $380 for the combo FYI.

Took the Savage model 11 243 to the range and my son did pretty good for the first time shooting a rifle bigger than a 22. He even put two in the same hole and then kept them all within 5 inches at 100 and hitting the bulls eye on his last shot. Very proud of him.

Congrats dad and son!
Now run some dry patches down the barrel and keep shooting it. Bet in 20-30 rounds it'll settle in. But, of course, you're probably going to have to shoot it to see how well your ammo is working for it.

What kind of groupings are you getting? I'm a little late to the party, but I got my little lady literally the same thing. While I didn't shooting it out of the box first, I did change the rings out to the Talley one piece. For about $40 from SWFA, seems like a good simple upgrade for a lot of piece-of-mind return. Mionetoo is just settling in. The grouping is spardic but tightening. I like it so far.

I shot the first 10 rounds to dial it in and the first 5 or so were pretty erratic but then the last few were better. I got the last two in the same hole in the bull at 50 yds before I turned it over to him. Hopefully it comes in a little tighter even as he shoots it. I won't even tell him about it, hopefully he will just think he is getting better. I told him that without a doubt he will getter better with practice. He is very excited about his new rifle and proud since he bought it with his own money.

If you're trying out different types of ammo, then please let me know what ends up working for you.
Right now, the little lady is shooting just plain jane 100gr core-lokt. I was hoping one day to get her a single box of something like a 100gr Gemeking or Nosler Partition loaded road that she can specifically use for deer hunting. While I've hunted plenty with 30-06 core-lokts, I have no idea how a 243 will do.

Korean, the .243 with either of the bullets you mentioned, is a death dealing machine. Have no fear in it.

While I've hunted plenty with 30-06 core-lokts, I have no idea how a 243 will do. I got a .243 savage Axis XP camo for the kiddos this year, and it came with a cheap Bushnell scope on it, which still is on it. First couple of times I took it to the range I thought it was a little erratic and would settle in, but not bad, shooting 2MOA at 50yds (enough to kill a medium sized game animal). Took it hunting for youth weekend and we didn't see a dang thing...which was a blessing in disguise. Once I got home and was putting it away, I noticed a rattle and checked things over. Wouldn't you know it the scope was slightly loose in the rings. So I tightened them down a bit and took it back out to the range. Little better shooting, got it down to about 1-1.5MOA with winchester 100gr. Then I happened to run out of ammo (wasn't happy with the shooting so I kept shooting) and got some Federal blue box 100gr. After no adjustments, my first 6 shots hit the bull at 50 yds, all touching in a hole no bigger than a nickel. I thought, fluke; so I aimed for another bull on the same target and hit it. I couldn't believe the difference the ammo made. Federal Blue box runs through that gun now. My son took his first deer with it this year, nice 120-125 yd shot.

Good deal Texas Buckeye! I had read some reviews of the scope mounts being loose out of the box so I checked mine first thing and they were tight. I will check out the federal ammo and see how it shoots.

+1 for the Savage 11, and if your willing to spend a little more, a Savage 11 light weight hunter. This model is the best of all, light, accutrigger, detachable box mag, the bottom bolt release, fluted bolt, looks and works great.
